Yes
I have a Packard Bell laptop which is a few years old. It's not the fastest (i52410m and 8GB RAM) but does alright for what I need. However the screen, as with most low end laptops is pants for editing on.

I have an good external display which I plug the laptop into for editing but I'd love to have a decent screen on the laptop itself.

Is it possible to replace a laptops screen with something better? Or are you tied to specific manufacturer / model replacements?

Does anyone know?

I doubt it'll be possible. The signal ribbon from the screen to the mainboard would need to be axactly the same (which it wont be) and the laptops lid would be cast and molded to house only the screen that is currenty installed..

If you have a local university with a good engineering course, you might find a hacker who'd take a stab at it. Most engineering departments have 3D printers these days and a determined student might be able to get the screen from a donor machine to fit. If you had to pay for it, though, it would be a lot more money than a new machine. :(

I have a lenovo T430 and my screen is rubbish (as are the screen of all T430) so i looked at the changing for an ips. From what I saw, if the said laptop could have been bought with an ips screen originally, it's just a matter of swapping for another screen. If the laptop couldn't be bought with a better screen it became much more difficult to adapt a screen. In my case i would have needed to buy a screen from an XPS 14inch and modify (cut and rewyred) the connecting cable/ribbon so it would fit in the housing of my computer. So I gave up... and bought a nice external monitor.

Thanks for the replies.

I had figured that it might very well be impossible or nearly impossible. I guess it's not in manufacturers interests to make things like this easy!

I guess I might have to start looking at new laptops, at least I can tell the missus that I did try to find a cheaper alternative.......
