Earlier tonight I knocked my laptop off the arm of the sofa onto a tiled floor. Screen is cracked all over. Just about able to see enough to be able to back up everything essential onto a hard drive.
Just doing a quick bit of research now and I can order a new screen online for £46. Supposed to be simple enough to replace. Anyone ever tried anything like this? Laptop cost£365 in 09, insurance excess is £100 if I want to try claiming off it.
All advice welcome

Phil

I've done two (both Dells)

very straight forward

theres loads of online guides , youtube etc to guide you through it

thats providing you've got another PC !

Cheers. I have stolen the wife's new iPad to type this and she isn't happy so I need to do something quick!

Usually pretty easy. You may need a small flat bladed screwdriver to remove the trim and probably a small phillips driver too. Do check youtube for guides on how to do it for your specific laptop.

Take it easy and you'll be fine.

£46 sounds like it'll be the screen only so should be pretty easy, as above check for tutorials or better still get the manufactureres service guide, HP/IBM/Dell are all available.

Just make sure you get all the screws out before removing the bezel or it'll crack.

oh and sometimes the connectors can be a bit fiddly, have some tape handy to secure it if needed.

Paul.

Many thanks for all the advice guys. It is a Acer laptop, I have watched the tutorial and it seems straightforward enough.

I had to remove the keyboard to get to a connector - it all depends upon model!

My girlfriend did something similar and it cost under £100 to get it fixed at a local computer repair place, it was ready the next day. Having taken laptops apart before, for the small difference in price I'd let somebody else fiddle around with it.

Dead easy, did a laptop and a netbook, nothing to it and plenty of tutorials about if needed

Do let us know how you get on with it Phil.

cheers

Depends entirely on the model. Some are very much a pain to do with delicate ribbon cables and bezels that can snap with ease etc. Others are doable within minutes with the right tools.

it took me about 1 hour to replace the lid on my Acer, it should be quicker to do just the LCD :)

Thanks everyone for all the tips and advice. Received an email today to say that screen is on its way so hopefully will be up and going by the weekend. Amazing how much you miss the laptop when it isn't going. Though this iPad is great even if I'm getting evils from the wife!
I will let you know how I get on.

I've done one, was fairly straightforward, a little bit fiddly when it came to the webcam that rotates in the screen, but ok. As others have said if you've watched the you tube guides should be fine

Completely forgot to reply to this until now.
Screen fitted myself no problem, less than an hour did it and going well since.
Thanks to everyone who replied with advice.
