Replacement SKY Netgear wireless router?

I am planning to replace the SKY provided outdated Netgear router to take advantage of the newer technologies available out there.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
Are you sure that they are not tied to sky.

My friends router went pop, I tried to just buy her a branded router only to find they are tied somehow.

I am out of a contract long time ago hence I am assuming even if they are tied they should be able to not tie me legally :thinking:
 
you need to get the password out of the router to make the new one work, this can be done - do a search.

Be aware that Sky will not provide any customer support if they work out you are not using their router.

what "new technologies" were you hoping to take advantage of ?
 
Might be worth mentioning what 'newer technologies' you are after. If it's just for the sake of having something newer, is there really any point?
 
Better stability, ability to handle more simultaneous traffic, better wireless N, gbit ethernet ports, quality of service... All things that can be bettered by ditching ISP provided routers.
 
I'd probably ask sky for an updated router. There are decent ones on the market but what do you really need it to do?
 
The new sky router is much better and stable than the old one, in my experience - it'll only cost you £30 to get one off em?

Ring Sky, tell them youre not happy with their service, theyll try flog you a new router at which stage tell them you want putting through to cancellations dept as youre pig sick of the poor broadband service and want to quit sky all together, theyll put you through then you will be offered a brand new one FOC and also be given their latest NON existing customer offer half price for 6 month

Seriously, theyll pull out all the stops to keep you happy, i call every 6 month, im currently getting Sky World TV for half price because i asked for my TV package to be downgraded to the standard £21 package because i lost my job (didnt really) i also get HD and Multi room FOC

If you ask them to price match talk talk or Virgins line rental they will also do that saving you about another £4 a month

I have to say I've been a LOT happier when I've separated out the modem functionality from the router. I've had them separate for the last few years and that has given me much more flexibility.

IMHO, by far the best router available at the moment for sensible money is the Asus RT-N66U at about £100. I've also just picked up an ADSL 2+ modem for £12 (ebuyer - TP-Link TD-8816). Although I've not yet plumbed it in (awaiting the line) I'm fairly happy with the two managed routers I have here from TP-link.

Another vote for the Asus RT-N66U. I've put the horribly misnamed Virgin Superhub (possibly the worst router I've ever owned) and put it into modem only mode, with a RT-N66u attached. The improvement in data throughput, Wifi range and quality of service on data transmission have all improved immensely! :)

(ebuyer doesn't have a good price on the DLink). Will be setting up the TP-Link I bought on Saturday. Looks like it takes a bit more to configure than the DLink, but it is cheaper.

£130 (or thereabouts). and you're done. Should you ever jump ship to FTTC, you just replace the modem with the VDSL modem that is provided. Should you ever jump ship to cable (shudder) you just replace the modem with the BT one supplied. The router and all your network settings is kept with whichever provider you then go with.
 
A bit of a "picturesque" update on this thread.....

As few TPle on the thread mentioned to switch to SKY's latest router as shown below

So I asked on Freecycle if anyone may have a SKY router and luckily ended with the latest one :D

Did not buy the ASUS router but since had issues with wi-fi signal reaching the loft from ground level invested in a Devolo dLAN 500 AV Wireless+ Starter Kit as shown below :gag: (expensive)

Have SKY ADSL upto 20 Megs, a quick check on speedtest displays around 13 Megs for wireless connectivity

Happy with the overall result.

Just set one of these up today. Little bit to setup (setup the box as a bridged router before connecting it through a web interface). Works as expected - well better than actually. BT says we'd get anything from 7 to 17Mbits, it's currently sync'd at 22Mbits.

Wish I could trade some of the 1Mbit up for the 22Mbit down (running a VPN connection between the two sites).
