Hi,

My trusty Canon S900 has decided that it needs a new printhead which I can't find for any less than £77....... :(

So, not needing too much encouragement to 'upgrade', I now need a replacement.

Doesn't have to be a multi-function just a good quality printer that performs as well, if not better than my Canon. Don't want to spend the earth ;)

Any ideas? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Cheers

If your printhead is just bunged up then try a cleaning kit from these people before you part with hard earned cash for a new printer

http://www.printheadhospital.co.uk/

Buy one of their £15 kits and spend some time trying to clean the head.

It fixed the head on my Canon Pixma pro 9000 mk2

The printhead ( which I'd purchased before giving this a go ) is £127 to replace.

I need not have spent the money as Printhead hospital cleaning solution left overnight cleaned a completely blocked printhead.

Worth a punt for £15

Thanks Chris, didn't know these people existed! Worth a go at £15 though - plus they offer a 'no print, no fee' refund!

If it didn't work would you recommend your 9000?

I see the resolution on it is 4800 x 2400 - how critical is resolution as the IX6550 is 9600 x 2400 (and I don't think I'll ever need A3 prints) so a 9000 may be overkill?

Dunno whether it's overkill but I love the output I get from it, sharp crisp and colourfull prints.

I use Cityinkexpress refillable carts and their ink. The results blow my old Epson printers into the dust. Not saying Epson are'nt great printers just my opinion that the prints out of the 9000 are more than a match for expensive Epsons. I've spent time at Epson on a printing course so at least I've seen both makes.

The printhead hospital cleaning fluid even baffled my best mate who's been fixing printers for over 30 years, we worked together for many of those and both of us are impressed.

Make sure if you get one that you get a good seal with the pipe on the syringe they give you to the little nozzle that sticks up into the cartridge. Also stand the bottle of fluid in a beaker of boiling water so it gets hot, then stand the head in a little container of fluid overnight. I then used some of the liquid to pump through the head until it came out clear.

A few pruges of the head with ink to flush out the fluid and my printhead is printing perfectly again.

I'll keep the £127 head sealed for the future in case I ever need it. :D

Thanks a lot Chris, I'll give it a shot using your method!

I'll let you know the outcome.
