Replacement for my 7D

I currently have a 1Dx and a 7D that I am using to shoot non league football. A 400 f2.8 goes on the 1Dx and a 70-200 f2.8 goes on the 7D.

I am finding that as soon as the floodlights come on to counter the failing light, the 7D is rendered totally useless because the quality of the floodlighting is that bad and ISO 6400 just ain't good enough to get a decent shutter speed, even at f2.8.

In this situation, I am stuck with the 1Dx on the 70-200 f2.8 which isn't that flexible but at least gets me some goal line/goal mouth/celebration action.

My deliberations are around what to get for a second body to replace the 7D. Do I go for another 1Dx or for a 5DIII or something else?

Things I have considered so far

  1. the 1Dx is more expensive than the 5DIII
  2. the 5DIII aint too shabby at capturing sports so Ive read
  3. you cant go wrong with a 1Dx and I'll have 2 bodies with same settings and same control layout so less confusion
  4. I can use the 5DIII for landscape and macro work when not shooting sports, but havent seen if the 1Dx will be as good for this

I am fortunate enough to be able to buy either body

Any thoughts or considerations would be much appreciated

If I was in your position I would go for the 5d mkiii but maybe not for the reasons you mentioned...

I don't know if you shoot anything else but sports? If so a 5d is much smaller than a 1d series body especially without the grip so may be more useful/ practical for other things...?

I would potentially agree with the macro view in that a higher mp count should allow more cropping that could be useful?

As far as I know the af system is the same so that wouldn't concern me overly. only ISO performance would concern me, there different sensors so presumably different performance?

But for me the main reason to get a 5d rather than a 1dx is that it's a new and different toy ;p

the frame rate alone on the 1dx would be enough to convince me to buy another, plus if your happy with the results it is giving you why take a chance on an unknown quantity? Alternatively, why not rent a 5D3 for a weekend or so and see how you find it, before committing to buy? At least that way you will know for definite one way or the other.

Nige,

2x 1DX's if you have the funds... I had 2x MKIV's which I sold to make funds available for the 1DX. I was considering a second 1DX but funding was tight so I opted for the 5D3 as a second body. To be honest, apart from the slightly different functions of the buttons and a few minor menu options, I am totally happy with the 5D3.The AF is as good as the MKIV if not better.

The only downside is the frame rate on the 5D3, it forces you to be more selective when releasing the shutter. This initially was quite annoying, but its made me think more about when to release. The 12 FPS of the 1DX really allows you to be a little lazy in this respect.

I use the battery grip with the 5D3 but if shooting weddings the grip can be removed and this will significantly reduce the weight. however, handling may become akward if you are used to using a gripped body.

I think Tony (KIPAX) is using a 1DX and a MKIV as a second body. He may be able to give you his opinion once he comes across this thread.
I think BIG ROB also use a similar combo 1DX + 5D3

Yep I am using the 1Dx and 5D3 combo & I am in agreement with you.

As funds permit I would def go with a second 1Dx.

For sports the 1Dx IMO just murders the 5D3. I am finding that the focus speed on the 5D3 is nowhere near the 1Dx.

And as Tug says I am sure Kipax will be along soon enough.

I have a mk3 in great nick for sale here, still a great camera with the weather-sealing, 1.3x crop and fast FPS to cope with all but the most challenging conditions.

I've been using it as a backup body up until now at some dingy grounds, it's sat alongside another mk3 and a mk4 for me!
