Hi

I'm thinking of buying a lens to replace my Canon kits lens 18-55mm. I've added a Sigma 10-20mm, a Sigma 105mm Macro lens, a "nifty fifty" lens and a Canon 55 - 250mm lens to my collection so far this year. Having used these lenses I can see how "soft" the pictures are taken with the kit lens and I feel its now time to replace it.

As a newbie, however much I would love a "L" lens I don't think I can justify it at the moment so something reasonably price, anything up to £500.

Which lens would you recommend I replace it with and why?:)

Sigma 24-70
Sigma 24-60
Sigma 17-70
Sigma 18-50
Tamron 17-50

I have the 24-60, and have used the 24-70 extensively, and I can vouch for both of them.
the 24-60 can be had for £190, while the 24-70 £220.

Sigma 17-70.

Blinding sharpness!

Cheers,
James

Common theme this one....

I've recently oered the Sigma 24-70 (See Here) which I think, is a very good alternative, especially as you have the bottem end coverd anyway.

Edit: My typing is bloody apalling today ! :nono:

For £500 you could actually have your first L lens! The Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L USM.
Unless you want a longer focal range lens than that?

Just a thought. Sorry if that tempts you ;)

Your budget may stretch to a second hand Canon EF-S 17-55 IS f/2.8, or EF 24-70mm f/2.8? Otherwise, I can recommend from personal experience the Siggy 17-70 (as James has above), and the Tamron 28-75mm (although it may be too long on the wide end for a crop body).

Although....any future plans to upgrade to a full frame body? If so, and with the budget you have, steer away from EF-S glass, and Sigma DC's.

I just replaced mine with a Canon 28-105 USM II. This has got some great reviews and I have taken some great shots with it.

I picked it on eBay for £80, so this can be had at a good price. As you have the wide end covered, this may be worth considering, although there are better out there if you have the money.

That is what I would go for as well, would fit well between the 10 - 20 and the 50/55 - 250 perfectly!

It is a cracking lens too! I think mine was £399 delivered from Kerso.
