Looking to upgrade from my 40D to Nikon. I'm currently looking at 2 models, D300S and D700. Any word on a replacement for the D700?

they're both great, if you got enough money, get the D700

It looks a great camera but I would kick myself if a new model came out 2 months down the line for the same price, thats the problem. Are we not due for a replacement? This would effect new and used prices.

not that I know of there won't be a replacement for the D700 yet, but if you have enough cash get the D700

lots about this on nikonrumors.com. we are hoping but not holding our breath

There are nearly always rumours of replacements to most models and once in a while, the rumour's true.

IF there's a replacement for the D700 soon, I can't see it being much below 2 grand but it could mean a fair drop in the new price for D700's but bear in mind that VAT is likely to rise before too long and that'll take some of the saving out straight away.

Fair point indeed.

I'm looking for a camera that will last me a while. The issue like most is money. With the D300S I can probably stretch to 2 decent lens where I would be limited to one on the D700. Is it worth paying the extra over the D300S?

The camera is purley for my hobby. Pictures vary from family, landscape, wildlife pretty much everything.

The D700 is better, but you need to think about the real differences - the two main ones are crop factor and ISO. Yes there are other differences but these are the main ones imo.

Do you need the extra reach a D300 will give, great for wildlife/airshows, not so good for landscapes and portraits? Will you need to use high ISO (over 1000)? As an everyday camera the D300s is the way to go, as the 700 will probably be overkill, and you can use that money for glass. The 700 is nice, but unless you shoot in dark areas, ott.

That pretty much sums up the problem and the way of thinking. I don't tend to do telephoto shots with my prime being a 24-70 EXDG 2.8 on my Canon. I do like to shoot without flash though so the extra light is always nice.

Seems like one day I edge towards the D700 another the D300S.

Forget rumour sites they are mainly replied to by people who are just guessing or hoping. The D700 will not be replaced this year nor will the D300s or the D90 but there will be a new Nikon ;)

From a 2nd hand point of view is it worth going for the D300S over the D300?

What about Canon and thier range. Surely they are loosing sales because of the additional MP?

There will not be many D300s cameras 2nd hand. Check out the many D300 v D300s threads and reviews to see IF you are willing to pay the difference for the difference in cameras. Mainly the difference is video.

Not really MP only sell cameras to the lower end consumers people who buy higher spec cameras are more bothered with the quality of the image rather than the MP.

Did they also say they were not going to produce a FF camera? :)

Difficult to know what to do.

IIRC, they said that they wouldn't abandon the Dx format not that FF was never going to be an option.

Sorry don't understand the last post but the D700 will be the cheapest FF Nikon for till at least next year.

Canon must be doing some market research to put R&D into developing higher spec MP with lower noise. I would imagine Nikon will follow suit. It's a business after all.

From other forums and reviews it does seem minimal. Personally I wouldn't use the movie side of the camera. I have done this with my TZ7 and always forgot to transfer the files.

this. or - if there is d800 or whatever. d700 will hold the price nicely . so no worries about that. d700 is all you need if you really want to go for FF ! :) so - that's that.

Both excellent cameras. What lenses you talking about getting with the D300s?

I'm not really up on Nikon lens so I would be lookiing for some advice? With my 40D I used a Sigma 24-70 EXDG 2.8 which I thought was a great lens. At the time I couldn't stretch to the L Glass equivalent.

I have about 2.2K in the budget for the camera and lens. On the Members Market (OcUK Speak) there is a D700 and 24-70 2.8 Nikon which would be ideal. Going down the D300 route would allow me to buy more, difficult.

Sounds like I'm going to get a great camera regardless. :)

The D700 and 24-70 f2.8 is a classic combination which works wonderfully  It is basically what I use for 80% of my shots :)

:agree: 100% Got my D700/24-70mm pairing a few weeks ago and am so glad I did. They go together perfectly, well balanced in the hands, and they. just. work!

Like the OP I pondered over the purchase of a D700 this 'late' in its supposed life cycle but I'd rather be taking pictures with it now than waiting around to see if and when there is a replacement, how much, when in stock etc etc.

My D700 won't stop working wonderfully when its replacement appears, whenever that is, and it's such a fine camera I believe it will hold good second hand value for some time too. Not that I can imagine wanting to part with it any time soon!

It will be next year before it is replaced ;)

There is another technical issue to consider. If you have a heavy investment in cropped frame lenses then you will have to replace them if you go to the full frame D700. Nikon's cropped frame lenses will work on their full frame cameras but only at the expense of massively loosing pixel resolution, which rather defeats the point of going full frame in the first place.

My advice, as above, is to go for the D300S unless you are seriously into night-time photography.

I've had a D300, now I have a D700, the difference is immense, with the D700 you just don't worry about shooting at high ISO, so much so that flash almost becomes redundant, the viewfinder is bigger and brighter, AF seems faster, i'm getting more hits when shooting fast bikes at Oulton than I ever did with the D300.

The D700 and 24-70mm is well worth the money, there's one advertised in the classifieds now for £2300 delivered, if you buy a D700 you won't regret it

Yes I have my eye on it. A bit over budget though.

I have no Nikon equipment so it would be all from scratch which is why I'm pondering going straight to FF. So far with the pcitures I take I have not needed more than 70mm however it's something I would like to try. 24-70 is the key range for me.

Is it likely to be a while before you can buy more glass if you go for the D700?

Yes it would but saying that I had the 24-70 for 5 years and the only time I took it off was to swap bodies. 10D, 20D to 40D.

I'd go for the D700 then and pick your lens wisely :) I don't think you can beat that body for the money.

Very unlikely to see a D700 replacement this year.

D90 replacement yes but D700 replacement I would expect to see around CES next year. PMA has moved to September now so thats a long way away so has to be before that.

D700 with the free Grip deal is so good. Just wish I could get more stock!!!
