Good evening,

I bought a 50mm lens with a Praktica and paid €15 for it. The camera is in excellent cosmetic condition, although it's quite dusty. The lens is dusty too, but I noticed that the filter threads are damaged; it took a hit in that area.


Where the word "coating" is written, is the defect present

Can I try using this camera?

I've seen a few videos where they give advice on how to use it. I can try it gently with this one. here.

Yeah, assuming the aperture and focus both work it should be fine unless you need to use screw on filters. Most of the time dust has negligible impact on images except in certain conditions.

Pentacon 50/1.8s only cost around £10 on their own if not cheaper in bidding so probably not worth buying a special tool unless you have other damaged lenses that need seeing to.
 
That's nothing to worry about. If it has damaged the mechanism inside you might have grounds to worry, but I doubt that.

@RyanB everything works properly on the lens but i would like to restore it for the pleasure of doing that to a vintage lens ahah. first ore later they will be more rare

If that's the case I would offer caution using the tool you've linked to. It needs a delicate touch to ensure you don't damage the threads whilst bending it back into shape.

The secondary aspect of that tool is the metal pins/ flat heads used to unscrew internal rings and element blocks. It can be a bit unreliable and they have a tendency to loosen from the handle in use. A dedicated version of that tool is preferable and less of a risk it will loosen up under force , slipping and scratching the glass or anti-reflection paint inside the lens.

If you're going to remove the elements for cleaning your best bet is a set of rubber lens wrenches to minimise risk of damaging stuff.

The pentacon 50/1.8 is fairly straightforward mechanically, plenty of guides on YouTube. Just be methodical about the order and direction everything comes out in and keep track of your steps so it goes back together in the same order it came apart.

I've got 3 or 4 of them in a box somewhere so if you get stuck I can probably talk you through it if needed.

P.s. I can't remember if you need to remove the mount to access the rear optical block, if you do be very careful as there is a tiny ball bearing used for the aperture click mechanism. Its usually only nested in a groove and can fall out easily, either into the lens or on the floor, Its small enough that you need eagle eyes to spot it if that happens so best to look out for it in the first place and not lose it. Without it the lens aperture still works but feels off.
