Repacement for my kit lens

Hi Getting myslef so full of info I am loosing touch.
I have the 18-55 kit lens and was looking to replace it with something better.
The lens I have at the moment are:
Tamron 10-24
Canon 28-135
canon 100mm macro
canon 100-400

I am looking for something in between the 10-24 and the 28-135, that will replace the kit lens, I have been looking at the canon 17-40L but keep reading bad views with it on the cropped sensor so was looking for other ideas in the same focal range. I am happy at the moment with the 28-135 so the canon 24-105 is out at the mo as I want the widness that is inbetween the 10-24.

Why does the 17-40 get so many bad views from people on here on a cropped sensor but the 24-105 get great reviews for every camera??
I am trying to keep away from efs lens as maybe one day I Might go full frame, so donot want to spend masses amounts of money on something that could become obsolete when I went FF route

I find that the tamron is just a little too short at times and the canon just not that wide enough at times.
Eventually the 28-135 will be replaced with something a little better, I use the kit lens alot when in the house taking pics of the wife or my little girl so just wanted a better quality lens in that range.

It does not fail me in any sort of way that I could mention off hand, but I remember getting my 100-400 and being blown away compared to the 75-300 I had at the time, it was sharper clearer and just a better quality overall, so I would like the same quality from the range too.
There is a reason a kit lens is a kit lens and why canon make L glass and their top of the range lens's

The Canon 17-55mm f2.8 would be the obvious choice and what I would go for in that situation. If that's too much, then the equivalent Tamron, Tokina or Sigma lens.
 
So why not the 17-40L lens??

I looked at the 17-55 f2.8 and its not out of reach just need to save a little more lol.

I donot know if I would find the primes a little too restrictive, I cannot comment really as I have never tried one.

Because it's one stop slower and doesn't reach as long a focal length. Compared to the 17-55mm, some of its specifications are compromised in order to cover a 135-sized frame, which you don't need with your camera. The only advantage is that it's built to a higher standard.
 
How about the Canon 15-85mm, decent range and cracking IQ. Admittedly not very fast but it depends on what you're shooting ;)
 
canon EFS 17-55 f2.8 IS nothing better in that focal range for a crop canon
 
Another vote for the 15-85 IS USM, it's what I replaced mine with when I was in the Canon camp, it's a cracking lens.

I agree, just got my 15-85 yesterday and it is very sharp with great focal length cover. I tried it out hand held in dim light and it was superb. The IS is pretty amazing too so i'm VERY happy!

I agree I love my 15-85 i got it to replace the 18-55 and the difference was amazing. Very rarely take it off now
 
My brother has a 17-40L and I have a Tamron 17-50 non vc and I can't tell much difference in image quality tbh, the build is loads better though.
 
Ok after much deliberation and digging around i am going to save a little more and get the canon 17-55 f2.8, as seeing as I would use it more indoors than out like my 18-55 kit at the mo the advantage of the f2.8 would be alot better.

Only down side I see to this lens is that if I ever went FF it would not work so would have to sell and re buy, but i cannot see me doing that any time soon.
