How to remove Win 10 icon advert spam: Hide from the system tray by “show icons”, customise. Remove entirely by uninstalling patch KB3035583.

Control Panel
Programs
View installed updates
Find & highlight kb3035583
Uninstall & reboot.
Then when Windows update offer to install it again, right click the update & click Hide.

It seems so early to advertise. The tech preview is barely usable to me with too many issues and inconsistencies.

I've got the small icon suddenly appeared on my taskbar, I don't find obtrusive at all so I have just left it as a reminder to now & again check for any updates on the current issues with win 10.

Same here, nothin to make a fuss about :)

It's win 7 I have just now, I don't have beta version.

Great tip. Is there a similar way of removing the advertising spam from my iPhone?

I hadn't even noticed it until I read this thread.

So insignificant as to be easily ignorable. Not worth the trouble of a reboot.

I've noticed that Windows Media Centre will be killed off in W10, nor will be it be available as an add on download. That's a bit of a let down as it is my favourite program when watching and recording TV on the PC with the DTV tuner stick fitted into a USB slot (Happague's own TV viewer doesn't seem to want to work on my W7 but the barebones driver does).

What issues are you having?

I've started booting into win10 for everyday use since the last update (10130).

I have yet to experience any issues at all with it.

Battery drain. Scaling doesnt work well on QHD surface display. Application window inconsistencies, pen input inconsistencies, the list just goes on.

I do wonder how they get this production ready and out by the 29th.

My phone is even worse, scaling for high res display is gone bit just looks crap without it, the tiles aren't see-through and don't scale properly. Very slow and a battery drain.

Nope not yet for me.

Ah, so you are having some driver issues then? Not quite the same as w10 not working. On my laptop which dual boots w7 and w10, w10 is noticeably quicker and I haven't noticed any difference to battery life whether running in w7 or w10.

It works as expected.

fortunately to the huge majority of phone users that's a real "who cares?"

You should consider a decent phone OS, like Android or iOS ;).

I don't understand how you diagnose that as a driver issue. Besides drivers are a core part of the operating system and also considering a Surface Pro is made by and marketed by Microsoft I think it is reasonable to expect better.

Lol at Android being a better OS, to me that just highlights you haven't got a clue or are merely trying to be funny. Remember vhs that was the better one as well wasn't it ;)

You think Windows Phone is a better OS than Android? OK, I suppose every village has one person who thinks WP of any flavour is the superior OS... (Where's that ROFL smilie?)

I know when you add up iOS users and Android users you come to a tiny proportion of smartphone users, but maybe that minority just feel they are better, we all realise WP holds around 96.3% of the market.....doesn't it?

With regard to drivers, everything you mentioned is a driver issue, scaling not working at a resolution? Surely graphics driver? Pen input? pen/touch driver?

Application window "inconsistencies", probably not a driver as that's a pretty airy fairy statement that doesn't mean much and not a bug I've experienced or seen mentioned.

You are mistaking popularity with being the better one. Remember VHS that was the better one wasn't it?

Driver issue or not, mine is a Microsoft device it uses Microsoft reference drivers. If Microsoft issues a new operating system I expect it to work.

PS. No scaling windows isn't a driver issue those are core operating system functions, especially so now they move to a universal application framework. It is not a driver issue on Windows. If you actually are close to what it does you really should know that as it is one of the headline features of Windows 10.

I think calling it spam is somewhat of a stretch.
Thanks for posting how to remove it but I don't really find it intrusive, it just acts as a reminder that I will need to do an upgrade in a couple of months.

Its frustrating that they won't let users dismiss the windows 10 icon at the bottom right when using Windows 7/8.1 Thanks for the info. Windows 10 will be a beneficial upgrade no doubt eventually, but I've tried it on my 3 laptops and i rolled back on all of them for different issues. Hopefully the bugs will be ironed out in 6 weeks. Until then, i'll continue to stay away from Beta software on production environments.

Post 10 tells you how to remove it.

Yes i noticed, hence the 'thanks for the info part' :) I mean that it's unfortunate that one needs to actually go through this rigmorael to remove the icon once you've actually accepted the upgrade and added the email address etc!

I think the update to 10 will remove the Icon once downloaded and installed.

Yeh i hope so, it would be kind of redundant at that point. I guess we'll wait and see!

If you've registered for the free upgrade, then it needs this "spam" to deliver it to you. It's not spam, not an advert. It's an icon that sits in your system try and does nothing unless you click on it. Mine is staying there, so it can download Win 10 in the background when it's released.

I think the update to 10 will remove the Icon once downloaded and installed.

Yes it will.

The whole point of this systray icon is purely to allow you to upgrade to 10. In what way is it spam?

It's OK, I don't think I need to debate further the annoying icon that does not remove itself after you have accepted the upgrade. Not sure where 'spam' came from!

Ahha, the Op used that word

From Windows 10 Privacy Statement - the stuff that's really boring to read.

Controlling the Transmission of Data
Use of the Programme software and services is at your discretion. Many features that transmit data to Microsoft are enabled automatically. You will not have the option to turn off the transmission of data for certain features in the Programme software and services.
To stop the transmission of all data, you must completely uninstall the Programme software and services from all of your devices. This may require you to reinstall your device’s operating system."

I can't see a clear definition of exactly what data will be collected. However, from what I gather, Edge and Bing are integrated into the OS. If MS isn't going to make money from licenses, it has to make money somehow, and from what I have read, MS will be following the Google business model. That means advertising, possibly nasty intrusive advertising.

As far as I am aware, Windows 10 is still in test and Microsoft are recommending it is used on test machines only. Anyone seen an update to this? MS have always used their customers to test their OS and applications and many have become tired of that and will wait until at least most of the bugs and security leaks have been removed.

I used XP for a very long time, it worked, it was awesome, I never wanted to move from it and certainly never needed to. I'm hoping that Windows 7 will last me just as long. I've seen no benefits from Windows 10 whatsoever and if it carries with it any of that mess of an OS they call Windows 8, I'll steer well clear.

To honest Windows 10 has been a breeze to use and it runs really well for me. Been using it since the 29th when it launched. All went great. Happy so far!

Same here. I was running it in a virtual machine during the test stages and was very happy and confident to install the formal release on my production machine.
