I'm not sure if it's real or just a feeling but it seems like more and more the exif is being removed from images before posting. Any one else noticed that?

Are you referring to your shots or those in general dod?

Shots in general. I usually leave mine in but over the last couple of weeks it's just felt like there are more people posting without the exif. Might be totally wrong and just unlucky :p

After viewing a couple of pictures on the threads after reading this - then I would say that I would agree with Dod - as most of them were "No exif information available" ....

Then again aren't there a few PP programs that remove the exif data - as am sure that there was a thread (quite a few months ago) regarding the removal of the exif data form the processing....

could also be down to the hosting.. flickr doesnt let you rightclick and view exif on linked pictures for example

I was actually just thinking this morning that I wanted to ask how you read exif details on peoples images. I tried backtracking images from threads through to hosting sites to get to it  and thought, surely you guys don't all have to do that

i use FxIF plugin for FireFox, if people link their flickr images correctly and according to flickrs rules you should be able to click their image and if the image has EXIF the flickr page will show it there.

funnily enough I was just about to say a couple I looked at just now were hosted by that site, just another reason to dislike it :p

some programs remove the exif because they aren't made to retain it, some photographers prefer to remove it so that others don't see what they have done...

people are saving for web I suppose or doing layers on new canvases - I don't bother checking exif data any more its not of any use to me.

ah flickrs alright, its just people not using it properly.. ;)

:p Or not upgraded to a pro account yet.

I'm still trying to decide whether I want to stick with it before upgrading, but until you get a pro account the "original" sized image isn't available to link to . . . therefore no EXIF available via right clicking.

a basic account doesnt stop you linking back to the flicrk page like youre supposed to though? that should have the exif on shouldnt it?

If you are using PSE and you select "save for the web", all EXIF data is stripped off.

I think Gimp strips the Exif as well. If anyone knows of a plugin that can be used, I'd start including the data.

Thanks for this, great plugin :) Helps me learn being able to see the EXIF data on the kind of photos I want to be able to shoot.

I leave all my exif info in, but then I generally host on Pbase or my own website.
It's caught me out a couple of times trying to use older photo's on my course as my tutor pointed out I have to take all new ones.

There is a setting to retain it.

When you 'save as' click the Advanced Options thingy and it gives you the option to save Exif data - tick it then save that as the default option and should will do it every time.

Something like that.

Thanks, Ed, I'll give it a try. Hopefully one more person that'll be posting Exif :)

WOW!!!!! Gorgeous art, here's a gold star and add your fantastic image of a bucket to my anonymous group which is full of similarly **** shots ;) Perhaps a bit of an over generalisation but I can't stand that aspect of it :)

On flickr if you look at the image on the flickr site, rather than a linked image, it will say This photo was taken on February 19, 2011 in Scarborough, England, GB, using a Canon EOS-1DS or similar. If you click on the bit where it says the camera model the full exif data is there.

True, but I want to look at images here, not flickr :)

Been meaning to add another comment here for a while. After reading Ed's suggestion on how to maintain the EXIF when editing in gimp I found sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.

I eventually realised that when I was cropping images, I was just copying the selection to another image meaning the Exif was gone. Instead, I need to use the crop to selection instead.
