Removing cigarette odour from a bag

As they say you live and learn. Lesson learnt!

Most sellers in eBay are generally reasonable people. Few people like this give everyone a bad name.

Not all smell is an issue. Just certain ones especially hard ones to get rid off like cigarette.

As a none smoker I can fully understand...I hate sharing a lift at work with certain people as the stench of smoke is terrible...Good luck, you may end up with both the bag and the refund! lol
 
to be fair if the seller is a heavy smoker as a lot of the French are (think pungent gitane brand cigs)they will be unable to smell it anyway . .. hence there saying it doesn't smell
 
As per the reply t the top - febreeze should sort it out.
My first DSLR came from a guy in the village who had all his gear in a shed which he clearly smoked in while editing.
The camera and the bag were pretty evil smelling.
I looked at in his garden and assumed the smell was him not the gear.
When I got it home I couldn't stand to have the bag in my office - I used alcohol wipes on the camera and it stopped smelling quite fast.
The bag was liverally soaked with febreeze and the bacteria in it did the job and ate the smell completely.

I don't see how that could happen lol
As far as I know eBay will only refund after return is received.

I understand the point of smokers losing the sense of smell to cigarettes and it's not limited to just that. I use Listerine mouth wash everyday and I can't tell the smell at all but my missus can lol.
But he claims he is not a smoker.
It's quite obvious where he's kept the cigarette too lol because the odour is coming mostly from a front pocket in bag.

Well I'll give this a go if the return fails.
I rather not jeopardize anything so he won't accept it.

Though I am tempted to try febreeze since surely it can't make it any worst?? Lol
 
To be fair I hate cigarette smell but after having a serious fire at home last year the insurance didn't want the bags back so they all went through the washing machine with no after effects. That included all my Lowepro bags and lens pouches and my Thinktank bag. All are still water resistant and none of them have the worse smell of a house fire. If your not happy with your purchase then as you have done give the seller chance to sort it out. I laugh at Pet free comments too. I have a dog and a cat and none of my possessions smell of either as they are both hypoallergenic animals causing no smell or allergic reactions. I would however tell any possible buyers that I have animals in my house. As Pete E has said maybe in future as the question, I genuinely hate cigarette smells as an ex smoker so whatever I purchased would have to reflect in the price.

What does that Febreze advert say ... "nose blind"?
I don't know about your pets of course (and no offence intended) but so many pet owners have no idea how much their pets and indeed often their homes are affected by smell.

Many times there is no point in asking. I asked one of the car mirror was still folding and they lied just to get the sale. I could claim but can't be bothered frankly. The point is they may lie particularly if the issue is subjective

I totally agree, I've been to many houses that reek. I did a huge amount of research before getting my dog and cat as to allergens and other things like shedding of hair. You could definitely be correct but I've been away for month and come back to my little fellas and never had a doggy or cat smell that I could discern and none of my friends or visitors have mentioned it, but then again they could just be being nice :D

No. Why not just let a few large tomcats mark allover it? That will mask the original smell just as effectively, will be just as disgusting but far less toxic
 
I have put old camera bags in the washing machine , Come out nice and clean and also smell nice
 
I looked on the manufacturers website, they specifically said not to put it in the washing machine as it could destroy the waterproof material.
And of the reasons for me buying this bag was for the water proofing material.

Yes it can and does happen ,I bought a monopod that arrived damaged ,put in a return request and got refunded in full ,still got the monopod

did the seller say you could keep it?
I doubt my seller will say that and lose money on refunding.

@nandbytes youve been sold something that's not as described. Ebay will side with the buyer every time. Dont keep wasting your time. Get it returned and refunded.
 
Parfumiers use Alcohol to neutralise the smell in their work areas.
The alternative is wash it.
 
The smell is micro ash fibres, so just keep hoovering it and foam / suds from natural soap lightly sponged over the bag will reduce the smell.
This just has to be repeated over a period of time.
It is no different when pubs / clubs allowed smoking in doors and I would come home with my hair, clothes smelling like an ash tray,...yuk ! !
 
Update:
The seller has decided to ignore me. No reply to my last message.
I asked ebay to step in. ebay have told me I need no longer try to contact the seller and that they will handle the comms now. They informed me they have sent him a reminder to send me a postage label for the returns which I have not received yet (something tells me I'll never receive it!). ebay has told me i need to wait till the 10th November and that they have put the case on hold now (whatever that means).
 
Update:
ebay has initiated a money back guarantee refund. I still have the bag!!

Looks like I may be trying some of the suggested methods above to get rid of the smell lol.

As I told you above , I would think they keep a eye on this sort of thing but if a genuine grievance then it’s seller beware

Well to be honest he's ignored all comms from me and eBay for how ever long. Simply ignoring both the buyer and eBay doesn't do your credibility any good.

I'll be leaving him a negative feedback anyway which I actually would rarely do. I almost always look to give positive feedback.

Don’t think you will be able to do that after a refund ,in fact I would advise against it ,e.bay will devalue his seller rating anyway as a matter of course

In fact it seems both of us can leave feedback and he's left me a "negative" feedback (since I am the buyer obviously its positive but with a negative comment).

I simply replied in kind :P
I have asked ebay to remove his bad comment in my feedback and they have said they'll have it done in 48 hours. Hopefully after this I won't have deal with this again!

Instead of leaving a really bad comment if the seller simply contacted me asked me for the bag back I would have posted it back even though I don't need to but now he's not getting back.
