Yes
so I have converted a cheap secondhand compact to IR and now wish to glue a stepup ring onto the front so I can use different IR filters . The pop out part of the compact is smaller than the filters.

Has anyone else removed the threaded ring from the camera side of one to give a flat surface to apply an adhesive too?

If so what tools did you use?

Has anyone done it and warped the ring, if so what method should I avoid?

Without a photo I'm left guessing a bit - can you post one? Not clear why the thread's a nuisance.

Maybe rubbing on 100 - 150 grit abrasive on a flat surface? Then - you're trying to glue metal to plastic?

I'd just get some fine wet and dry paper and gently rub it down on a flat surface like a price of glass 600 grit would be fine enough with a little bit of water or wd40 as a cutting agent.

the thread would help the glue to bond so if poss leave in place

So these pictures Show a 30to37mm ring, not the 27to30mm I'm awaiting delivery of.IMG_0020.JPGIMG_0021.JPG

I hope to get a nice wide flat surface to adhere too, as the thread is a couple of mm deep and I suspect quite deep to bridge with adhesive.

I then intend to insert the 30to37mm and use cheap 37mm filters to play with.

The best method would be a dremel with a cut off disk to take the majority of the thread off then finish off with a fine grinding bit/coarse sandpaper. I wouldn't recommend trying to sand the entire thread down because you'll soon get bored!

If you can't get your hands on a dremel, a standard metal file would do the same job if you clamp the ring carefully.

You shouldn't have to remove the thread and there is too much of a chance of damaging the camera/lens if you do.
Araldite or similar two part adhesive will do the job.

Have you thought about a push on filter/adaptor?

That sounds like a plan, I have a dremel kicking about but hadn't considered it.

Thanks for your help.

I hadn't thought about push on filters, but the lenses on the camera retracts flush into the body every time you switch it off, or around 10 seconds after you switch to playback mode.

Just a thought in case there was a chance of it working. Push in filters seem to be a bit expensive.
I'm trying to think of an alternative easy way to accomplish what you are trying to do.

There's that little metal in that thread you'd sand it off in a couple of minutes without risking slipping with a dremel and knackering the whole thing. The fine sanded finish with wet and dry paper would give a real good bond surface with epoxy glue.

Fine w&d ain't gonna cut very fast. And any trace of WD40 will sure have to be removed (detergent & warm water then rinse & dry) before any attempt at glueing.

This seems like a lot of work to go through to use cheap filters.

The whole thing was intended to be a cheap quick and simple toy to play with IR and see if it interests me in the longer term (some hobbies/interests I keep coming back too and others simply fade after a few weeks of playing). If I were to do it again I would simply get a battered dslr to convert and use my existing lenses with a 52mm filter.

I sanded down the ring with wet and dry and have epoxied it today. I will share the results when I have some.
