Remote triggering

I am at the stage of 'playing' with remote flash at the moment (i.e., I think I have gotten to know what I am doing, but have no 'goal' to aim at).
I have the Canon 7d, and got a 580 EXII second hand.

I am currently using the 'ir' method to trigger the flash. This has the disadvantage of being reasonable line-of-sight only. However, I believe that ETTL is still posible.

Are there any other disadvantages to this method? Are there any major disadvantages to RF wireless? I understand that ETTL with RF systems is extremely expensive?

You'll need deep pockets for Remote IR with TTL (eg Pocket Wizard territory...)

What objects will you be photographing?

The 7d is meant to be able to do TTL over IR, as far as I have read.
Or do you mean RF?

Well, at the moment, it is playing. People will not model for me, so I am stuck with pets, wildlife, or still-life (from small to trees).

I was messing around with a Squirrel last week, it didn't seem fussed by the flash.

Just bought a set of PW's flex/mini tt's,

they have replaced the pretty good but flawed Canon ST2

performing well where the canon kit couldnt

Recommended A+ for the PW flex & Mini tt (despite the cost)

I looked into this couple of months ago and there were RF triggers available on ebay for approx £100 (trigger+receiver). It was ETTL compatible. Was a lot cheaper alternative to PW. Forgot what the name was though, but google it or check on ebay. It will come down in price shortly I believe.

It was something like yongnuo RF602 but with ETTL chinese stuff but apparently rather good.

Thanks, I will take a look around. It is hobby based so don't want to spend out too much.

Well,

Same here mate, that is precisely why I got myself yongnuo 602 for odd £40 off ebay. ETTL would be useful, but once you are on location you can set these on manual and off you go. For me the only downside is that there is no high speed sync i.e. max is 1/250 of a second which may sometimes be limiting if you want to kill the daylight. I will wait for prices to fall down:lol:
