Sorry this is a nube question.

I photograph craftsmen at work in their workshops which are sometimes a bit dark. This is voluntary work as part of a scheme to help them promote their work.

I like natural light but am looking for a simple portable way to fill in the dark corners.

A friend gave me some remote triggers, a bit that sits on the hot shoe with 2 remotes receivers and said get yourself a couple of speedlights.

Question is for the use I am looking at is there any benefit in EX speedlights at £150 or would an older £20 speedlight do the job just as well?

I am presuming that using the remote triggers you don't get the metering anyway? or do you?

I am using fast lenses, an 85 1.8 and looking for a sigma 30 1.4 and just wanting an option on upping the light a little and filling the corners where needed.

any advice welcome. Thanks

With the remote triggers, you lose any automation as they just send a 'fire' signal.

Any old flash will work but I would look for something like a Vivitar 285 (or 283) as they have sensors and can work semi-automatically.

Unless you are paying big money for TTL triggers then you just need simple manual flashes as your trigger will simply be firing the flash. You are better getting ones with manual power settings (1/32, 1/16, 1/8...etc) or you will be limited to moving the flashes all the time and/or using ND film over the flash head to vary light on the subject. However, if you are using one or two just to blow a white background you may find that even this is not necessary. As said, the 285 is a common choice for reasonable GN settings and price.
