I have been doing some shots recently with my Nikon D40 on a tripod, and think that it's going to be better if i pick up a cheap remote shutter release.

I have found a few on eBay, but wanted to see if anyone had 1st hand experience?

Do these things work well? Obviously most of the ones on eBay are just copies, but i guess they work the same?

Also, there seems to be a lot of multi-function remotes like these ones:

Any ideas which one to go for, or a reputable retailer?

Regards, James.

I bought a Jianisi wired remote the other day from Amazon for £2.99.

Works fine and allows me to use the BULB mode properly

I bought a cheap ebay wired one for my 20d, works ok but there is no positiveness to the half press or press, you have to listen for the shutter sound to be sure the exposure has been made.

Remote shutters are ideal, though have you thought about just setting a 2 sec. timer? Just a thought :)

Do any of these cheap models have the ability to lock the shutter open on B setting for long exposures?

hey! good thought, that would work for most of the stuff that i want to do, however when i use it on "Bulb" mode, you need to hit the shutter release again to end the exposure, and you have to be quite careful about rocking the camera, even on the tripod.

I was also watching a robin on the bird table in the back garden yesterday, and thought it'd be great to set up the camera and just wait until a bird lands for it's lunch, you never know when that might be :tumbleweed:, and it means i can watch from the warmth (I'm a big wuss) of the kitchen with the remote and click on demand without scaring them off. :runaway:

I got a wired remote from ebay at 2.99 and a wireless remote for 1.49. Mines a Canon camera, but still should be some cheap ones for Nikon.

I've got an eBay cheap on for my Canon, works great :D

Just bought one of these off eBay,

at £7.50 inc p&p, it's a little more expensive than some of the others, but has more features, claims to work from 15m and has a wider degree of operating range from the IR sensor. it's also 1st class from a seller in surry, so I wont have to wait 20 working days for it to come from Hong Kong! and i can play with it whilst we still have the snow

I bought a wireless one from eBay for my 450D - but it doesn't seem to work.

So before changing the battery I just want to check that all I have to do is set the option to shoot with timer/remote from the button next to the display.

Yeah, all that I had to do with the Nikon was switch it to remote shutter mode.

Funnily enough, I let my colleague borrow mine a few days ago, and it doesn't work with his 450D either. The batteries are fine.
Don't waste money buying any new batteries for your's. I'd send it back to the seller if i were you...

Sorry :(

James.

no worries. hope you manage to get it sorted ok.

It looks like I needed to reboot the camera: turn it off, remove the battery, re-insert it and then back on again. Seems to be working a treat now.

Really? How peculiar!

Glad to hear you got it sorted! :)
