I am after a remote shutter release, to use with 'bulb' mode for longer exposures. Do I need anything special, or will a cheap MC-DC2 off eBay/amazon do?

Depending on what you want to use it for, there may be 3 options.
1) An IR remote which tend to be cheap but have a limited range (especially in sunlight) and work best from in front of the camera - great for self portraits but not so good if you want to shoot wildlife from a little distance.
2) A wired remote which will plug into a socket (usually behind a rubber bung on the side of the body) and can be used at any distance that the cable will reach to. The only downsides are a) the length of cable can restrict the "range" and b) the cable can be a trip hazard or pull the camera/tripod over if tripped over.
3) A radio remote which will probably plug into that same socket but can be used at far greater range than the IR one and has no physical link between the button and the camera.

Check the camera manual to see which of these options are available to you. I have used all 3 - the IR remote is the only option I have on a couple of my bodies but my current ones both accept the plug in solutions. Personally, I now only use the radio remote since it works at a distance and has no physical link. Both it and the cable release I have are Hama ones and work very well - the more expensive Nikon ones can add extra functions but I've never used them so can't advise on them.

tbh i have bought a cheep ebay sutter release cable and it works the same way as the offical canon but is a 1/6th of the price, its hardy as well, i have been in the ****ing rain using it and its still going very strong.

just remember to keep an open mind, if you buy cheep you often have to buy twice (not so in many of my cases).

Every IR one that I've seen used have without fail been useless wastes of space, what ever you do avoid IR like the plague....after that it really does depend what you need for your trigger if it is just a on off that you need then yeah go cheap no point at all in going expensive

I've got a cheap eBay ir one, works fine for casual use. Haven't tested it at any great distance but that's not what I bought it for. It can't do any harm to try one for a £ or 2.

To be honest I think I am going to just get a cheap cable off ebay. I only plan on using it to jam the shutter open in Bulb mode, then to close the shutter again at the end of the shot (mostly for night-time seascapes/light trails). As long as I can do that with it I will be happy.

Go wireless. I find there's a tendency to slightly move the wire when taking the 'lock' off. Yongnuo did a fantastic one for my D800 (works as an intervalometer too) and I'm sure one will be available for yours.

I have a wired and a radio control, Flea Bay, pennies, no problems on my 7D,

I got one of these, it's absolutely spot on. (IF YOUR CAMERA SUPPORTS IT)

Exactly the same as the unit Nikon sell, but 10% of the price.
