Yes
Im after a remote shutter for my D40x. Im not sure what the benefits are over having a wired one vs a wireless one and visa versa, but my initial thought is that I wanted wireless one. One feature I would really like though, is the ability to lock the shutter on. My camera doesn't have a T feature, so when doing long exposures I have to use the bulb setting and keep my finger on. So id like a remote shutter with a lock, so I can set it and walk away for a while. Any suggestions?

I have a D50 and use the ML-L3 wireless remote which I picked up in america for £8. You can get them off the web for about the same I think.

I'm not sure if it works with D40, but presume it would as I know it works the d70.

The only minus point is that you have to be in front of the camera to use it - so make sure you are not in shot!!!

Saying that, I use mine a lot and love it!!

Thanks for the suggestion. When you say infront, you mean the lens side? Why so? Is it an IR one? Do you not find this restrictive at all? And final question.. does it have the option to lock the shutter open?:)

Hi again.

It is an IR one yes. I don't find it too restrictive at all - simply holding my hand over the camera and pointing the remote does the trick - so no problems.

Yes you can lock the shutter open with it. Selecting BULB mode - press once to open shutter - press again to close.

All in all a handy piece of kit!!!!

i had an IR one then didnt use it because it was for bird photos and i had to get round the front of the camera with the unit for it to work scaring the birds...

thus a nice wired remote release for me now!

Out of matter of interest, on ebay are remotes for a nikon D70s does the ordinary D70 not use the same remote....i have found an article that says something about the D70 not having a remote socket...is this so??

FOr a friend, not me....I am still a Canon supporter!! :D

hey, i use this remote Ebay link (and it works with canons), it has a little white LED to use as a torch aswell which is pretty handy at night to see the top lcd on the D50 as it has no back light. The best thing is the mirror that comes with it, just use an elastic band to attach it to your lens then you can use the remote from behind! If you set the camera to bulb, the first trigger from the remote opens the shutter, the second pulse from the remote will close it. hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies. The one you have linked to oliver9523 seems ideal. I think I would miss the ability to set it off from behind the camera, so the mirror seems like a good solution.:)

Edit; Bought! :)

Good man - looks good!!!

I will have to construct a mirror using some tin foil for mine!!!

Janice - just out of interested, as far as I know (or at least by looking at mine) - I cannot find anywhere on the D50 for a wired remote - hence having to use IR.

No complaints mind!

I got the IR Remote for the D50 last week (used it in those wood shots so pressing the shutter release didn't affect the shot. I had no problems using the remote from above and slightly behind. It's not perfect, it would have made sense for them to put the IR receiver somewhere where you could use it at range from behind, but I don't think it's a huge issue.

Me neither Panzer - never had any real issue using mine.

I appreciate what Janice says about the bird shots though. Having not tried for any wildlife, it's not something that has bothered me. (Yet!)
