I'm pulling my hair out folks.... I need some help.

I bought a wireless trigger and remote from eBay for the Sony Alpha series (I'm using the A300), it turned up and the trigger fit onto the camera no problem but the receiver wouldn't fit onto my flashgun, it's the HVL-F42AM.

So, after some reading I discovered that I need a converter. I found this one on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flash-Adapt...4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1266923994&sr=1-4

It turned up... and it fits!

Then came the next problem. When I fire the flash on the camera or when I press the little button on the wireless trigger nothing happens. A little red light comes on on the receiver so I know that it is trying to fire the flash.. but nothing actually happens?

Any ideas?

dont know exact model of your triggers but i had a little trouble first time, try and wiggle the connections on the reciever/flashhotshoe , mine was not the greatest fit

Two things are likely; poor connections or firing voltage is too low for flash. I have leads which fire my newer flashes but not my older ones as they require a higher trigger voltage.

Welcome to the wonderful world of off-camera flash. They always fail to work just when you need them most! :bonk:

I had a similar problem. It turned out the adaptor that your flash connects to tells the flash that it is connected to your camera so it won't fire remotely. The adaptor is actually to enable you to use a sony/minolta flashgun on a canon/nikon camera.

I ended up getting a different brolly adaptor that allows you to attach the flash by screwing nto the plastic flash stand that came with it.

Any chance of a link?

Sorry Fabs, I think we're getting our wires crossed.

I want to fire the HVL-42AM flashgun remotely, without using the popup flash (as this tends to blow out parts of the shots which I really don't want to and also gives nasty shadows).

Now, I've had my flashgun in work today with someone who knows far more than I do about electronics (and I hope this helps people who will be coming here from google searches)!

They have kindly laid out the pin configurations for us. Logic says that any normal flash gun would fire when the ground (G) and F1 pin were shorted (a paperclip put between them), this is the case with the other flashgun that we tried but not with the HVL-42AM. He took apart the adapter which I'm using that is designed for the Sony pin configuration and I can confirm that only the rear two pins have any sort of wiring going to them (the G and F1 pins).

I am now very confused and a little annoyed. Someone, somewhere must have this flashgun working off the camera. I feel like I'm missing something obvious.
