Hey all ,

I'm thinking of getting a remote control shutter release for my 400D and am considering either the wired one or the one with a cable and I can't decide which to go for.

I've researched both and can't find anywhere that actually has a good product description!

What I am wanting it for is to be able to perform BULB function on my 400D for pictures such as starry nights. In other words I want to be able to have a really long shutter speed - which means I want no camera shake, hence the need for the remote control (I have a tripod)

What I was wondering is does the wireless remote allow me to "fix" the shutter down, like you can with the wired one (by keeping your finger on the button) or will the wireless one have a facility for pressing shutter down, keeping it down and then releasing after a certain time (.e.g 10 mins)

Any product suggestions and comments would be much appreciated - I haven't got any particular model in mind so any help would be great.

Thanks

Hi digitaldan,

Can't help too much I'm afraid but I have just bought the Hama CA-1 Remote for my 400D from Warehouse Express. Although it does the biz at the moment, I'm not totally convinced it's going to last that long if used often. But at the end of the day it was only £14 so what the 'eck.

i dont know about canon:razz: but on a nikon with camera in bulb 1 press of remote zapper opens shutter and 2nd press closes it ,i presume a canon does the same

Hi Dan, I have some of the wireless and wired shutter releases for sale in the trader ads here.

The wired can do bulb and I'll check for you if the wireless one does too.
Thanks,
William

Gofer - how does that one you mention deal with BULB mode - will it go on for ever by keeping your finger down or can you set a timer on it? thanks,

Daniel

Hi Daniel

Sorry I took so long coming back to you. I've just tried it and when In BULB mode the shutter stays open until you release the button.

Steve

thanks gofer. that sounds like fine- although i guess ideally a bonus feature would be to press it down to open the shutter then press it down again to close it in BULB mode - just saves you having to keep your finger on i guess so you can go make a cuppa tea or something :)

wbessada - did you find out about the wireless ones you mentioned?

I just recently bought an item on ebay.com that I expected to do just this...
Aputure Timer Remote C1 for Canon 400D 350D RS-60E3 R8A (330236847187)
(The seller has now left ebay though, just before I received the item to write a review)... however, there are identical (in design) remotes on ebay still selling under the name "Phottix" (looks more professional in packaging), "YongNuo", and possibly others for approximately $30-40USD with $15-20USD in shipping.

This remote advertises certain features:
Timer delay: 0s to 99hrs 59min 59s in one-second increments
  • Exposure time: 0s to 99hrs 59min 59s in one-second increments
  • Interval: 1s to 99hrs 59min 59s in one-second increments
  • Number of shots:1 to 399,-- (unlimited)

And to be compatible with:
  • Canon EOS 30/33/50/300/300D(Digital Rebel)/350D(Rebel XT)/400D(Rebel XTi)
  • Contax N/Contax 645
  • Pentax IST-D
  • and other Contax, Pentax, Samsung...

Also, the instructions mention to use the following settings:
  • Drive/Shooting Mode: Single Shooting (not remote/timer)
  • When set to remote/timer mode, there is the 10 sec delay since the remote shutter release acts just like the shutter release on the camera.
  • Camera Mode: Manual or Shutter (not needed)
I found any mode to work fine (P/Av/Tv/M/...)
  • Shutter Speed: Any or Bulb
If using the remote to set "Shutter Speed" (LONG) in hrs/min/sec, then you need to use the "Bulb" setting. Since the remote only sends the "shutter" signal, Bulb mode is used to open and close the shutter on each shutter button press.
To set shutter to "Bulb", go to "Manual" mode and scroll the shutter speed to the next setting past 30". "Bulb" is only available in Manual mode, not Tv.
  • Interval Timer: Off (do not use remote/timer mode)
  • Focus Mode: Manual or Continuous-Servo autofocus (no focus = no shot)
If the camera cannot acquire a focus in the first split second or so, then the shot will be missed. There does appear to be a momentary "half press" (focus) signal sent before the shutter release signal, but if focus is not acquired in time then no shot is taken. I prefer to dial in the manual focus.

Even works without Batteries!
  • I noticed the basic shutter release & lock functions work even without the batteries! So the batteries are only needed for "unattended" use (set bulb timer and interval shooting).

This is a "must have" tool for automated time-lapsed and long exposure shooting! :)

Get the RC-1 you won't regret it. I was in the same situation as you a few months back, i thought you know what i'll buy both, bought the remote one and then realised i would have no need for a wired one!

hi,
since the thread is talking about long exposures, may i ask wheather a 2 hour long exposure causes any problems with a EOS 400D?
i am worried about the sensor heating up and either causing noise and/or burning out??

many thanks

I own a Canon RS60-E3 & have been scratching my head for ages trying to figure out how to make it work without the 10 second delay.
"* Drive/Shooting Mode: Single Shooting (not remote/timer)"
When set in single shot mode instead of remote mode it works instantly:thumbs:
I am looking to do some firework shots & this should help a lot.
Thanks:clap:
