Remote Control For D80: Wired or Wireless??

Hi. I'm looking for a remote control for my Nikon D80. Are there any obvious reasons to choose between remote controls and the wired type?:thinking: Any recommendations of brands would be good too.
I'll mainly be using it for taking prolonged exposures.

Wired. The infra red ML-L3 is useless unless you are standing in front of the camera (even then it's a bit hit and miss). The wired remote is much better with a 2 stage action for AF and a lock for long exposures.
 
I have Nikon's ML-L3 which is infrared but needs to be infront of the body to trigger also have to reset timer on the body as can only use for short bursts

Is it worth the extra for the Nikon, or just go for the Hama?
 
There are alternatives, you can get an infrared wireless remote that works with the D80 at a range of up to 320 feet off ebay for around £15, or an infrared one that works at 45 feet and it costs.......£1.00 and sometimes even less....



I might even tell you where to get it if you ask nicely ;)

Avoid like the proverbial plague. You still need to be in front of the camera and i found with 3 examples of these types of wireless controller if you are any more than a foot from the camera they wont work.
Get a wired controller and get yourself down to Maplin and extend the cable if you need more distance.
You will save yourself a lot of heartache in the long run.

Not true, I have fired my cameras from over 100ft through trees and other solid objects using the wireless remotes of the type available from various HK Ebay sellers. There is no need to be in front of the camera with a wireless remote either, it can be fired from the side, behind or anywhere else you choose.

Not disputing your experience with them m8.
When i used a D70 wireless remotes worked brilliant from different distances but with the D80 i found them all shocking due to you having to be in front of the camera.
Have you tested your remotes on a D80?

Yes, it was the success with the D80 one that prompted me to buy one for the D300. The Nikon IR remote certainly doesn't work from behind the camera, but both my Ebay and Poundland ones do :)

The £1.00 can be had in most Poundland-type shops, they're more commonly used to change channels on your telly :D All you need to do then is enter the correct code (there are lists available online) into the remote and it will fire any Nikon with an IR remote capability

The wireless ones are sold by quite a few vendors on ebay, such as here
