For those of you who read my ...I have had an accident threat - http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=25631 - will remember the awful pain I was in. Well I got some bad news about my knee. The Dr sent me for an X-ray a couple of weeks ago as the pain was still bad and I had developed a lump on my knee-cap which was visible when I bent my knee back. Results show that the fall has triggered Arthritis in the kneecap and long bone from the thigh to the kneecap and will progressively get worse. He said short term use Ibuprofen Gel for the pain, medium term a referral to an orthopedic specialist and long term - Surgery! It constantly feels hot and tight.

I find it agony to kneel on it and dreading the school portrait shoot coming up next month, as I usually end up crawling over the floor.

Advice please! my accident happened whilst I was working away from the office. I work for the government and it was reported at the time. Should I now go and explain what the Dr has said or wait until it gets to the referral stage? This has seriously affected my photography side as I dread getting down and not being able to get up.

I will stop whining now.

report it NOW
there is never too early for this sort of thing
especially if it's as serious as it sounds

hope it isn't that bad - but do look after you
can you kneel on a cushion?, use the other leg?
get a right-angle adaptor for the viewfinder so you can look down into it?

good luck, btw!

Not whining Gilly, your health is the most important thing.

From a work point of view you need to look at your employment contract regarding other work. From an insurance point of view you should review your policies as further work that complicates your condition may cause you problems should you need critical cover or similar.

Use the ibuprofen and get best advice (and 2nd if you have ANY doubts!).

Regards

Gary.

so sorry to hear this Gilly.....I don't know the legal side of things like this but I think it needs to be documented?

Sorry to hear that Gilly :(

get it reported asap. You may need witness documentation as it is a while since the incident.

Good luck.

Don't let it put you off the photography side, just take an assistant to help you back on your feet if you need to bend down.

Fortunately, I had 7 witnesses that have made a statement at the time for the record. It was reported the day after the accident. You are right, I know and I will have to talk to HR on my return to work on Wednesday.

I was thinking of asking my daughter to make a bean bag type cushion that I can use for photoshoots something that will mould to my knee when kneeling.

Thanks for your comments guys.

Get yourself a new knee as soon as poss, no need to suffer through years of pain if you can avoid it.

Sorry to hear about your knee  If surgery is inevitable, I'd opt for that first rather than going through years of pain only to end up with an op anyway. Hope it starts to feel better soon though - take it easy.

Aww! thanks mmcp42. Cough! a bit expensive though. At least I know there is something out there that can help.

I popped into work today (back in work tomorrow) whilst in town shopping and spoke with my line manager. He said to see HR tomorrow and he would do everything he could to help. He knew all about it as he was one of the witnesses.

mmcp42 - I have to say this, your Avatar is a bit spooky - everytime I see it, it un nerves me. Am I a woos or what

hee hee
me quite lovable really
deep down
underneath it all
somewhere!

Very best of Luck getting this all worked out Gilly. A friends dad had a similar problem 6 or 7 years ago, actually broke his kneecap in a fall at work due to a wet floor that wasn't sign posted and was a shiny painted floor anyway so you couldn't even see it was wet. His job? A postman...cant walk, can't work! He had to take early retirement, basically with same sort of issues, the damage had caused arthritis in his knee [yes, he got good compensation without too much of a fight] and accepting the early treatment he was offered means although he does have bad days, particularly on cold wet days, his doctore reckon it could have been a lot worse then it is by now and has so far avoided any further surgery than the initial surgery on the kneecap. SO be positive, report and document EVERYTHING, and do whatever you can to limit damage and stress on the joint. ;)

Oh, mmcp42's angle finder...have a look at this.

ebay view finder

I have quoted this particular ebay shop because I have bought about 10 or 12 items off them in the last year and had perfect service everytime, despite being a Hong Kong based company, the latest one being a new kit bag that is fabulous. They have several versions of this angle view finder for the various Canon and Nikon DSLR's, as well as shedloads of studio kit, and all sorts of photographic gear.

hi gilly
i can sympathise totally with you, i have arthritis in both knees which on certain days takes me all my time to walk. I have been to the doctors for the last few weeks and have been given 8 paracetamol a day, dont sound like much, but they do work in keeping the swelling down. I have also found that doing small light exercises on the knees also helps in keeping them movable..
hope you get yours sorted, there really isn't any cure for it.

Hey Gilly ... sorry to hear about the developments in your knee following on from your fall ...

Sounds really bad and very painful and I empathise sincerely ...

You have done the right thing so far in getting it documented and reported ... ... just ensure you follow it up along the way ... :D

If it is any consolation they can do wonderful things with new knees these days ... :suspect: ... rather than suffer the long alternative why not get the specialist to consider early replacement ...

Oh and WareHouseExpress.co.uk do a mean line in ready made Bean Bags in various sizes and colours ... even do a Green one ... (I've got two filled big ones ... !) ... ;)

Look after yourself ... :p

Thanks Ven. I might ask my daughter to make me a bean bag, seeing as she has my sewing machine. ...but thanks for the link.

Painful :( that sounds horrible! All I can say is, if he recommends surgery, it's a bloody good idea - orthopaedic surgery is one of those things that no-one wants to go through, but everyone says was worth it afterwards. I've had spine surgery and can vouch for that.

If you're looking for a good ibuprofen gel, see if you can find Deep Relief (in a white tube with blue and green bits). It's got levomenthol in it and gives a very deep hot feeling, and seems to work so much better than other gels.

Cheers SilverJON, I will look out for it.

Surgery...ooh poor you.

I suspect /hope that the docs are not talking replacement knees. They only last about 10 years. Less than hips do.

Best of luck.
