Hi all,

I have purchased a second hand D5500 which was bought new about 6 months ago. The warranty has never been registered.

I have no proof of original purchase, but i do have the warranty slip with the serial number. No details have been filled in.

Am i going to be able to register it? (How?) - and if so, i assume i will get 6 months from now, instead of the full year.

Thanks,
Nick

According to Nikon the warranty is for one year from the date of original purchase and, in order to claim, you need to produce "...the completed warranty card and original invoice or purchase receipt indicating the date of purchase, product type and dealers name, together with the product". This suggests that without the original purchase receipt you may have difficulty claiming from Nikon.

As far as I'm aware you need to have proof of purchase (i.e. Receipt) to make a warranty claim. They would check at that point whether it's within warranty and not when you register it online. The other point is warranty is not transferable and only applies to the original purchaser which you have already said you are not.

You can register any Nikon equipment on your Nikon account (I have all of my equipment registered including new and second hand, just so I have the serial numbers logged in case of theft/fire/loss)

The unofficial way of claiming warranty on a second hand camera is for the original purchaser to act as a go between and sort out the warranty repairs. You would still need a receipt or a way to prove date of purchase from an official Nikon dealer/distributor.

The only time I'm aware of Nikon repairing second hand or grey cameras is the recent product recalls on the likes of the D750, and only covers work for the recall issues and associated re-repairs (faulty AF after recall repair). If say a button or accessories socket stopped working that wouldn't be covered by Nikon.

This is the thing with buying second hand privately, you don the get any warranty but it's usually a lot cheaper than new or from a second hand shop.

Unfortunately the warranty slip is worth less without the original receipt AFAIK. I know when I've made warranty claims they've wanted to see the receipt, not the warranty card.

IIRC warranty has to be registered within 30 days of purchase as well.

Thanks for all the replies, thought it was worth a punt.
The camera is mint with around 1000 actuations so touch wood it will be ok.
