Does a new vehicle have to be registered AND licensed before it can leave the dealer ?

We have a slight dilemma .

My son wants a new 50cc moped, but is not 16 until next month and we have been offered one now at a very good price.

It seems most insurance companies won't insurance him until he is 16.

Without the insurance it can't be licensed. It can be registered, because he just needs ID for that.

The dealer wants to register and license it before we take it away. We would just like to have it registered by the dealer and then we would license it when he is 16.

I could have it registered in my name initially and get temporary insurance, but I don't really want to do that as it will show 2 owners straight away.

I had a similar situation when I bought a second hand car a year or so ago. The dealer insisted it was licensed before I took it away.
 
Registering is not a problem, you just need proof of ID for that.

The dealer said we need to provide the insurance documents, it seems this is only for licensing.

I will have a word with him on Monday morning to see if he is OK with just registering it.
 
not that im aware of as the paper work will say on it the name of the company on it

i currently work in a bike shop and also register the vehicle's at dvla too


we register new bike's and the manufacturer / importer will have the company's name on it although when you go into dvla they dont ask for id but private may be diffrent

so it may be possible plus i think it is £75 to register the vehicle if he wont let you it is his choice but i know we wouldnt do that we would ask for the full amount of the bike then hold it for them untill he is 16

have a word as long as that they have the full money then they shouldnt be a big problem with it

and yes you will need insurance to register it

Ask if you can simply pay for the bike and if he'll store it for you until you want to register it, we used to do this so that cars went out with a tax disc starting on the first of the month that the car went on the road.

The reason we are getting it a bit cheaper is because he is refurbishing the showroom and needs the space, so it has to be out in the next week or so.

can't he 'store' it in your shed?

depends if you know the guy I spose
 
All sorted, the owner does not need the shop cleared until the middle of March, so he will store it and register it at the beginning of March.

It also means we will get a '10' plate and not a '59' one.
 
ISTR that even a moped counts as a motorcycle so a buyer has to have a CBT (compulsory basic training) certificate if the bike's going to be delivered to their home. The alternative is for the bike to be delivered to a registered training center for the rider to use to take the CBT course. Then again, I did my instructor's course back in 1991 or '92 so I could well be way off the mark!

The dealer has said he will deliver as soon as we are ready and should not be a problem as I have a full bike license any way.

My son knows he has to do the CBT before he can ride it.
