Hi everyone. Not sure if this is the right forum for this but here goes anyway.

I am currently looking to purchase my first dslr, so I have been watching Ebay for a few weeks now while doing some research. I have noticed a lot of items like this one.

See here

I am wondering if this seems genuine to you. It seems a bit too good to be true. I know people won't be able to comment on this specific seller, but what about the practice of selling refurbished cameras? Is this a good way to save some money?

Thanks

My mate has a refurbed 450D that he got off ebay and he has used it a lot, and it's still going strong for him.

I have a used one (not refurbed) and it's also going strong.

Thanks for info guys. I was leaning towards a reburbished one rather than second hand. I think it would give me peace-of-mind knowing it had recently been tested by Canon. It's not risk free, but I hope it would reduce the risk of getting a dud.

Danski, sorry, just seen your post. I really am slow at typing.

Thanks for the offer but I'm still keeping my options open at the moment, I'm not the quickest at making decisions. :D

It looks a bit strange to me, how would he get hold of genuine refurbished Canon gear???

I would place my money on him buying second hand gear and then selling it on as refurbished gear...

If its refurbish By Canon -Nikon or any other leading camera manufactures I would expect there to be some form of warrantee that goes with it even if only 3/6 months worth. I do see on the above links they give 1 year which is worth noting.

That's fine tatty - I'm in no rush to sell either. In fact, I may even keep the 450D as a backup as it really is a good camera. I would say it's (or the 500 or 550) the perfect starter camera for someone venturing into DSLR photography.

Whatever route you go down, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as there's so much more options open to you above and beyond what point & click compacts offer. But be warned you'll probably get the bug and it'll end up costing lots of money, like it is with me! But I wouldn't have it any other way hehe :bonk:

I have always bought second hand stuff and had no prblems (touch wood).

If you buy from trusted sources such as this forum then you're in good stead of getting something that has been looked after. Look for a low shutter cound and good itrader and you'll save some good money to put towards extra kit.

Refurbished kit is usually returned goods that had a fault from new and was replaced under guarantee. Canon check them fix the fault and resell them. They have the advantage that they are thoroughly checked over ... unlike most new kit.
I have bought a canon G6 and a 430 ex flash that were referbs .. they have been perfect.

Thanks for all the replies and advice.

Looks like I will be going for one of these refurbs. No doubt you'll be hearing from me soon. I can't wait to get started. :woot:

Mine is a refurb from an Ebay seller (not the same one though). After initially sending me what was quite obviously a faulty one that had been returned (a few bits of packaging missing, and the dead giveaway: it was faulty!), they replaced it without any problems with a correctly refurbed one, which I'm 100% happy with.

If you're buying your first DSLR I would strongly suggest popping down to your local camera retailer and playing with several brands. Canon make very good cameras, but so do several other manufacturers whose handling and ergonomics can be quite different. Chances are you'll love the Canon and buy one anyway, but you might not, and now's the time to find out!

Regarding that "Canon Outlet", I bought a point and shoot from them just before Christmas last year and it was faulty, having a focussing misalignment problem. They offered a refund or repair via an official Canon repair agent, but didn't offer a replacement. I figured if I was going to have to pay to return it, I may as well pay to get it fixed and sent it off for repair. It got returned with a supposed lens assembly replacement but was in exactly the same condition as previous. It took another return to the repairers before it finally got rectified.
The camera is now fine, taking good pictures but it took a while to get there.
I have to ask myself why wasn't the camera checked properly after 'refurbishment', and why wasn't it checked properly after repair by the official Canon repairer?

Yeah have visited a not-very-local shop and he only had 2 dslr's, both second hand.

The owner was a very nice guy and actually recommended I buy online. He told me that he can't buy cameras from suppliers any cheaper than online retailers sell theirs!

So after handling a Canon I feel quite comfortable purchasing one, lens options seems a bit better(and simpler) as well.

Thanks

Neil.

There is also a Canon Outlet Store on ebay at

I understand that these are the official Canon Refurbs

Yes these are the official Canon Refurb store. I purchased my canon printer from these and it comes with a full years warranty. Its the same warranty as new from shop. They have all been fully tested before leaving canon.

I needed an extra piece of paperwork and called canon. They asked the name of company and once I told them it was canon outlet store they sent out the item I needed.

Regards,

John

It might be worth checking the used section on London Camera Exchange store too. They may be a little bit more expensive than the online outlet. I always think that if there are problems then you save on the postage costs of returning to the online store (and the delivery worries). All used equipment from LCE is serviced and has a guarantee.

I have bought a 400D, Sigma 10-20mm and a Canon 70-200L used from LCE and every time the service and advice has been top notch.

Just done a search on LCE used section and there are 5 x 450D on there ranging from £329 (body only) to £419.

my brother had a fefurbed pro camera before having funds to purchase a new one, he had no probs and owned for 18 months or so.

Oh no, I'm increasing my options rather than narrowing them down.

Just checked it out and they are reasonable thanks for the info.

On a side note, how is your 400D working out for you? I had ruled out the 400d out because I seen on a review/comparison site that the 400d images came out softer the either the 350d or the 450d(tested using the same lens). Can anyone confirm this, or is the 400d a serious option?

Tatty, i have never had any issues with how sharp my images are from the 400D. Digital images always need a little tweak on sharpness anyway. Although i have never used a xxD or a xD so may well change my opinion when i do. I have noticed a marked improvement in sharpness with the L glass though.

If you are looking for example images taken with the 400D then feel free to browse my flickr, link in my siggy.

If you are buying your first camera now, then i would discount the 400D TBH. It uses CF for memory and i think that Canon are moving towards SD memory now (someone correct me!). 450/500D is more than likely the best option for a starter camera at this time.

Nothing like getting advice from people with hand on experience on these things! Thanks MG
