Yes
I'm thinking about getting an iPad and have come across the Apple site where they sell refurbished iPads. The saving on a refurbished one is about £80, and I wonder if that is a saving worth making?

Why are the units refurbished? Has anyone bought one? If so, are they like new in the box with plastic protection on the screens etc?

I'm sure there are some folks on here who have gone down the refurbished route and can help me.

Another question - Are they country specific like PC's? For example, if I bought it out in Spain, is the operating system the same as UK ones? Don't want to end up like with a PC where you need to pay megga ££'s to change the operating system.

We have a few iMacs, refurbished, as said, its impossible to tell, they are repackaged as new, new keyboards, mice, cables, manuals etc, your really wouldn't know, make you wonder why they do it?

chances are theyre units that were returned for whatever reason.

that could be something as simple as they changed their mind but had broken the seal on the box etc. or a cracked screen/scratched/DOA which they then repair.

they cant resale them as new so into the refurb section they go.

Yup bought one for my dad. They are the same, they just don't come in the same box

 Yes, but they are more expensive here than the UK - rather buy where it's cheaper ;) The difference will get me an accessory or two.

I checked the currency conversions Ricardo :naughty:

Many of them are likely to have been returned under Distance Selling Regulations and will only have been used for up to 7 days (I think Apple may give an extra 7 days onto this). As has been said, some will be unsold internal stock and maybe even unsold stock from certain Premium Resellers.. Either way, I've been happy when we have bought Apple refurb.

i got my mum a refurb from apple as i a wasn't sure she would get on with it
it was as new you couldn't tell the difference

I bought a refurb iMac many years ago. Turned up and was a much higher spec than I ordered. I emailed them to say are you sure I have the right one, and they mailed back saying they had run out of the one I ordered so sent that instead!

Bigger HD
Bigger processor
More RAM
And better graphics.

It was like new, apart from the box, but all packaging and cables were sealed. The casing was immaculate. I really couldn't tell it from new.

Plus you get a full warranty too.

I was also given a refurb iPad 2 at the apple store after the screen on mine went weird. They refused to swap for new as they said it was normal ( a huge patch of the screen was a different colour to the rest!!) but they said they could swap for a refurb.

Again, apart from the box it was like new.

The first part of the set up is to set the region, then the language. So you could set it up as region Spain - language English, or region Spain - language Español. If you wanted to keep on top of your Valenciano, you can even set it to region Spain - language Catalan.
If you wanted to use Siri, I'd recommend setting the language as English.

Thanks for the clarification. I think due to the price difference though it'll be coming from the UK, so won't have to worry too much.

You still have to go through the above set up irrespective of where it was bought from. Worth noting that you can add additional keyboards in the settings menu. That was you can switch between the English and Spanish keyboards as you wish

I've never noticed a difference with a refurbished product :) just the price!

Buy in confidence, the only way to tell the difference is the box it comes in. No issues with refurbished products from Apple at all, even the warranty is the same.

By the way, do you still have the 1000D I sold you a couple of years ago? I think you were going to IR mod it?

Thanks for that - I shall buy quite happily ........... If they ever come back into stock!!!

I had it modded for astro use - So the IR filter was removed. But soon reached the noise limit of the camera when I was doing 15 minute exposures in the Spanish weather!! Now use specific astro cooled cameras!!
