So... I've just brought myself 5 reflectors in 1... Pop ups... There's a gold, White, silver and also a black one...

How does a black reflector work??

Oh yeh if anyone is thinking.. That's only four... I can't remember what the last one was lol..

To flag out unwanted light.

I'm guessing the 5th function is a diffuser - certainly is on mine anyway. The black reflector prevents light reflecting back on to your subject (so in that sense it isn't really a reflector - more an anti reflector).

This is my simple layman's explanation. I'm sure someone will come along and put it more eloquently and scientifically correct than me.

Ok I think I understand.. So where as with a White reflector you would have the light bouncing off that onto your subject... But with the black reflector... Would you use it to block out light... So it would be between the light and the subject... If that makes sense????????

If you mean placing it between light and subject then I don't think that's exactly the function, you use it to stop the light bounce back onto your subject.

try it out: take a photo of someone with a light to one side of their face, first without the black 'reflector' on the other side of their face, and then again with it in nice and close. It's called negative fill, and really useful.

A black reflector SUBTRACTS light - You can block/flag the light with virtually any colour but using black will reduce the light on that side of the subject creatig shadow as compared to the other side.

THe 5th element is that diffuser where no cover is added. Place that between the light source and your subject and the light will be softer. On a harsh day with the sun beating down put the diffuser above your subjects head and the light will be softer as the contrast is reduced.

Ahh okies.. I'll try that out.. Cheers for the advice and help.. Makes alittle more sense now.. Just have to wait for them to turn up!!! Hurry up reflectors haha
