Yes
Thought I'd post a "heads up" about the competition being run by the Port of Tyne Authority.

Closing date is 2nd November, and they're after photos in several categories taken along the river Tyne.

Warning: They claim copyright on all entries.

Full details at:
http://www.reflect-tyne.com/

Cheers

Andrew

Might have to get myself doon to Shields and have a look around for some different angles!

Copyright again though... set a comp and get free pics taken to use....:bang::rules:

Yeah, I saw this a few weeks ago in the Journal. Sent off for the info pack and saw the copyright thing.

Tis a shame as well as (IMO) I have a lovely pic of the bridges by night - but don't want to give it away for free as I have sold a few to mates / fellow exiled Geordies.

Anth.

i would have considered my recent panoramas too, but 1. there isn't a catagory they would fit into and also the copyright issue.

Hi Folks

I took up the issue of T&Cs with the competition organisers. The official line from the Port of Tyne Authority is way more flexible than the T&Cs imply. I quote:

"The Port of Tyne has a fairly extensive photo library and there sole intention with Reflect was to create an annual event to profile the Port as one of the major contributor's to the region's push to promote culture and enterprise. Our intention is to use only those specific images which have either won or are runners up in the competition and I would like to strongly emphasise the fact that the Port of Tyne are paying the gallery for one extra month for the winners to exhibit their own private work for sale."

So, if you're happy to take this as over-riding the original T&Cs, feel free to enter. I will keep their e-mail with the above in, in case there's any hassle.

Cheers

Andrew

But they still get to keep copyright.
This is the answer I received:

All images shown for future press coverage, the book which is being
produced
with winning and runner up images entered and any further
publicity images are being used will have a name acknowledgement of
the person taking the image.

This arrangement will be between the individual and the Port of Tyne
Authority, this arrangement is put in place to secure images not being

used by a third party.

Hope that clears things up for you, if you have any further questions,

give me a call at the office on 0191 2303664.

Many thanks.

The competition is being run by a PR company.

I hate these greedy terms. It has nothing to do with some promotion of photography as a medium and always seeks to steal copyright. Such competitions belong in the Tyne imho. Why they do use terms similar to Fuji and build up a relationship based on trust over the years ahead with the photographic community I do not know. They could easily assert that Copyright remains with the photographer but that they retain rights for use in promotional materials. That has always seemed fair enough to me.
With these terms, they pay nothing at all for images, produce a book promoting their Port off the backs of honest togs and even steal Copyright through dodgy T&C's. Grrrr. Lets all withdraw our services from these oiks: they cannot operate a photo library without decent pics. Whatever next? Purchasing a Beatles recording entitles you to Copyright? Methinks Paul McCartney's lawyers might have something to say about that. Copyright is copyright is copyright and Port Tyne should know better.
Think I'll submit a self portrait sticking my fingers up. Grrr:D:nono:

If the world is beating a path to your door to buy your photographs then lucky you. You sell them where you will, dsiplay them where you are invited wahetevr

If not then you have a choice - a chance to have your photographs published, and perhaps win a prize, or just stick them in an album and dream about how good you / they are.

So your choice, no one is twisting your arm, but please stop whineing and moaning.

Maybe a new category next year - Whingeing Tyne.

And you rode in on your high horse to bump this 9 month old thread.......for why?

This is a forum for photographers to discuss issues surrounding photography. This is one such issue, so why do you have a problem with that?

I suppose if I started a lucky draw competition for the winner to receive a £50 shop at their local supermarket, but all entrants had to provide me with their bank details, and allow me to withdraw whatever amount I choose.....just to prove their identity of course.

Oh, and only lonely old women, aged 70 and over, preferably a bit senile and easily confused need apply.

Hey, I'm not twisting their arms, right?

"And you rode in on your high horse to bump this 9 month old thread.......for why?"
Derrrrrr, cos I just entered the competition thats why, and when googling for it came across this thread.

"This is a forum for photographers to discuss issues surrounding photography. This is one such issue, so why do you have a problem with that?"

So the only photographic issues we can discuss are ones that you agree with, or agree with you?

"If I started a lucky draw competition for the winner to receive a £50 shop but all entrants had to provide me with their bank details, and allow me to withdraw whatever amount I choose"

Yeah, great example - its so similar to this situation.

"Oh, and only lonely old women, aged 70 and over, preferably a bit senile and easily confused need apply"

That would be me then!

You Numpty.:bang:

No, you criticised everyone for discussing it, thats why.

"If I started a lucky draw competition for the winner to receive a £50 shop but all entrants had to provide me with their bank details, and allow me to withdraw whatever amount I choose"

Yeah, great example - its so similar to this situation.

The principles are the same. The people running the competition, get something for nothing.

You Numpty.:bang:

Don't come here and insult me on my forum, did your mother not teach you better manners?

It should also be pointed out to Donut.. sorry, dontlikewhine that we have many beginners here that would not have a clue about such copyright issues and what that means for your images, such threads bring the issue to their attention and provide information. Still, I doubt someone that seems to have registered for the purpose of bumping a very old thread doesnt have such considerations as part of their agenda.
