Ok so tonight is the first time ive used refine edge, infact its the first time ive tried to use a selection tool
here is a picture of my lad that i used refine edge on, have i done a decent enough job?
i dont mind if its terrible but could you just say how i could make it better

ok even i can see his left ear is a bit dodgy, dont know how i missed that
 
If you used the Refine edge tool directly after making a selection, you are missing a trick.
After making a selection and with that selection still active add a mask to that layer and work with Refine Edge on that mask, this gives the benefit of both mask and RE.

Open the red CC icon on your desktop, click on the apps tab, click on the tutorials tab under the Photoshop icon.
Sign in if you are not shown as signed in (Top right.).
At the time of typing, the first tutorial in the list is…
“Remove a person from the background with masking.”
It’s a Lynda.com lesson so it’s to the point; this is how I now use RE.

I don't know why, but I often struggled with this.

However, David's Dropbox link together with the video are both very good and helpful!
