Redundancy!

LAst time I was there:

PX: Closed
Marly club: Closed
Bowling Alley: Thankfully still open and a 1 minute walk from where I was barracked.
RBL: Open, but barely
NAAFI max: open, but a lot smaller

Luckily it still has the bus link to MGB. 2 months on that camp was not fun this time

Had another brief today. I think I'm going to take the plunge

John, really sorry to hear such tragic reasons for returning to RMC.

Chris, that was a very long time ago.

I remember the bowling alley opening - and playing in a league.

I think the PX closed a fair while ago. I can remember when it opened!! Before that, and sometimes after, we used to pop down to Wiesbaden and Heidelberg to enjoy their 'facilities'.

MG eh? The delights of Waldhausenerstr :D. And the Queens pub on the corner of the Alt Statdt where the management couldn't understand why the Brits wouldn't buy their specially imported Double Diamond  :bang: when there were all those lovely German beers available.

Those were the days. Travelling throughout Europe from RMC thanks to a fantastic exchange rate, tax-free petrol and autobahns. But no satnav

it has been 5 years next month since i was last there. they built a new huge Naafi in Gutersloh just as we were leaving (which they needed).

have to say i love our time there and it is a shame that the youngsters will not get the chance we had (never did learn to speak German mind)

Trying to remember Gutersloh Terri; whilst out there last year we went all over the place. Hohne, Hameln, Paderborn, Gutersloh, plus more other camps than I care to mention, plus loads of PR gigs in churches. We also got to play aboard HMS Ark Royal whilst it was docked at Hamburg (was actually on my birthday ) and even got the chance to have a wander on the flight deck and stand with my toes dangling off the ski jump

Good luck Chris, been a long time since I was in, did 12 years in the RAF, came out in 1996, never did Germany though, did a tour in Cyprus at Epi and spent 4 months down south at MPA the rest were UK tours (Honington and Boulmer), Happy Dayz

spent 4 months down south at MPA Happy Dayz

Rather you than me mate  I spent one night in the Death Star and nearly went out of my mind, I got totally lost just trying to find my way out of the transit accomodation! Stanley's a lovely city though (still feels weird calling it a city) and I love the Victory Bar :D

I did 3 months in Epi in 2005, and loved every minute of it. I love Cyprus.

Had a great tour down south, first week was a bit weird, so far from home and didnt know anyone but after a week it was ok, so many squadron bars on MPA it was crazy, got very drunk lots of times, even managed to bump into someone who I went to school with, very small world

Cyprus was just amazing, I loved living there, I lived in Limassol initially before moving up to Epi Garrison it was probably one of the best times I ever had, was strange initially being in the RAF and working on an Army Garrison but ended up being a great tour

I was very sad to leave in 96 after my 12 I had wanted to stay and make my life in the RAF but at the time they were streamlining, lots of trades were losing people and being replaced by Civvies, in my trade promotions were very few and far between, I was on the promotion board for my last 3 years without getting picked up so basically if you hadnt gotten promoted by the 12 year point it was bye bye, im still bitter about it even now :'(

Still very proud of having served for 12 years though

I'm proud of what I've done, and I owe a lot to the Army, but I've had enough. To be honest redundancy couldn't have come at a better time for me. There's no guarantee I'll be selected once I've applied, but I'm actually hoping

Hmmm. Could say;

If you cant take a joke, you shouldn't have joined. Grow some and man up! You haven't even BEGUN to pay back your mates for putting up with you yet. Stay in and make more memory's for IF your lucky enough to retire an old man.

Or

If you've got a choice, don't do it! You might not like where you are, but its a VERY different world out here, its nasty and with out much point. You might not realise it now, but your in the best ever place and you'll NEVER get back there.

Besides, if you leave, you might regret it and turn into an old, grumpy, cynical ******* like me! But hold on, its the ARMY? Nuff said.

I don't appreciate the tone of that at all. At what stage can't I take a joke? Got news for you matey, you are allowed to change your mind. I joined at 18, I was still a kid. It's attitudes like yours why the Army is in such deep **** in terms of morale.

Sorry, but your post was rather tool-ish.

You get out of life what you put in. I happen to think that forces personnel are, generally, far better prepared and able to cope with modern life in civvie street than sad people who continually complain that they've been dealt a dud. It's all about one's outlook on life, ambition, goals and dreams. If you don't have dreams then you can't set goals. And without goals you're not going to achieve anything.

It's life. You either suffer it or you live it. But the choice is yours.

This is a "nice" thread and I have enjoyed reading it. The OP has some major decisions to make and some major life changes and I genuinely wish him well having been there myself.

So please, let not have this thread turning into a battleground like most on this forum end up.

Stumpy, cut the lad some slack and lets all try to keep the thread friendly. Its bringing back some good memories for me.

Deutsches Haus , Paderborn

my fav place to eat in paderborn.. breakfast there is a must i say

I flew off the handle this morning, and for that I apologise.

However.

The Army I know now isn't the one I joined a few months over 8 years ago. The job I do now has changed, the conditions have worsened (IMO) and more change is on the way if I stay. At the minute it's very difficult for me to plan my life any more than a week or 2 in advance; this gets to me a lot, I can't commit to anything outside of the Army because of it.

Everyone's experience of service will vary. Mine has been generally positive, I've met some fantastic people and made some (hopefully) life long friends.

I'll miss the people. Everything else? Doubtful.
