I'm just about to back-up 2014 photos and the folder is huge. I went through my images and found some greater then 100mb!!
These a tiff files produced from either PS or DXO.
Is there an easy way to reduce their size without affecting the quality (guessing tiff lzw compression)?

Secondly, if I write my changes to the files in LR can I delete these changes later?

I got the same problem, I just bought a hard drive thats the same size as the storage drive. its 1TB atm but I can see that running out quickly. would be nice to know a way around this. but I am not keen on compression files such as zips/rars tho

I've now found 2 files +1gb
I presume this is because I saved layers

PSD are generally very greedy also depend on if you have photos stacked or merged...but 1GB+ damn!

Depending on how transparent you want to be...

  • TIFF compression will work and is transparent
  • Merging layers in PSD files should help
  • WinZip/RAR/gzip compression outside of the editing program will help but this is not transparent as you have to uncompress them manually before editing
  • Make a partition (or install a new disk) that has NTFS compression enabled. Transparent, but I have no idea of performance

Should give you enough to be going on with ;)

PS. Not using TIFF/PSD helps too, but that depends on your flow :)

Andy, might try that NTFS compression, got a raided SSD set so plenty juice there. hmm... interesting.

edit: just did a quick test, the NTFS compression saved about 5% storage space, so not that significant.

Hard drives are cheap.

Just remember back up when budgeting for new drives.
