Yes
I received my ball head yesterday - which looks quite well made, although this is my first. It has three controls on it, the smallest is for panning and the largest and the other appear to be for controlling the actual rotation.

What I'm unsure about is why the large control and the second to large control (on the opposite side of the head) do the same thing. It seems the larger one is for bigger movements and the smaller one for small movements???:help:

The big one will be the actual locking know - the smaller one should allow you to change the friction when the ball is not fully locked. This is the arrengement on my (non redsnapper) ballhead at least.

Correct.

With the big knob undone, set the friction for the body and lens combo you have so that it has a nice damped movement (not difficult to move, but not waggling around) with the smaller knob oposite. Then when you have that set, don't touch that smaller one again, unless you change lenses or wish to fine tune the friction. Then you can set the camera for a shot and then fix the head solid/reposition the camera just with the big knob. You may find the panning movement rather stiff for the first month or so... at least I did.
