Red Stripes

When I start up my PC the monitor displays a series of thin red stripes running down the screen. There are about half a dozen in a band about 1/2 inch wide. Then there is a 1/2 inch gap and another band of stripes. This continues across the whole of the screen. After a few minutes the PC just dies. Totally black sceen. The same thing happens in safe mode.

Any ideas.

im no expert on this, but it sounds like one of three things

1 display card
2 memory
3 motherboard


but hopefully someone will come along and pinpoint the problem for you.
 
my money is on monitor (does it happen just in windows or all through the boot process?), graphics card or cable being screwed.

best bet is to swap out the monitor and cable as a process of elimination as a first bet.

Just to clarify; when you say "the PC just dies" do you mean the screen is blank but the computer is still running, or does computer stop as well?

The problems started when I tried to un-install some software. During the un-install process the machine just froze. I left it for a while, nothing happened, so I turned it off. This resulted in the red stripes when I turned it back on.

i think this is a hardware fault rather than a software fault to be honest, it might of been the power off that killed the hardware?

The stripes first appear when windows is loading.

The computer just freezes, then the screen goes blank.
 
Sounds like a knackerred graphics card.
 
Try re-installing your operating system and all drivers, see if that cures it. I've had similar in the past from a cooked processor (overclocked too much without adequate cooling) but your problem most likely is not that.
