Over the last few days I've been over Reading way and can't believe how many red kites I've seen (approx 10), suppose they are slowly spreading down the M4 from Wales. Really good to see these raptors recovering so well.

That's were i was.... in the small shopping center, they were flying over the shoppers.

There was even one reported around Bath last year.

I'm lucky enough to live where they are really common, certainly several each day but I still haven't been able to get any decent pictures of them.

you should head over to gigrin - its virtually impossible not to get good shots there

Try Stokenchurch .........That's where they started breeding them again a while back ... I live about 10 miles away from there and we have about 30 circling above our garden in the summer ........... still can't get a decent shot yet though ....... must try harder

At stokenchurch area its worth trying the Aston Rowant NNR hill above lewknor (where the M40 goes though in a cutting) - you get them at the same level or below you sometimes as they search for carrion along the motorway

I was in St Albans last weekend and one circled above as it headed off towards the M25. Everytime I stopped it moved off just enough to be out of reach of my lens. Might see if the circuit it flies is a regular thing or just a one off.

Agreed. They dont half move fast though when the wind is up!

Matt - there's a couple I see regularly circling over Park Street/Bricket Wood
Most commonly in the afternoon - but not guaranteed !

Matt, I have them here in the garden :D if you want to come over some time and have a go then give me a shout. They come to call here - honestly:thumbs:

Back in the RSPCA today (looking for a moggy) and good as gold the kite came back, regular visitor apparently. Managed a few shots with 70/200, 1.4 converter and a 1D, once they are downloaded I'll know what I got.
Return visit is very likely, still havent got the moggy either.

Briony - cheers, will bear that in mind.

Red Kites have just arrived in Guildford on the downs. I hope to get pics of them.

Seen them regularly on the commute. Then flushed one from a tree when out walking near Partridge Green - didn't realise how big they are!

lol - I read that BBC story initially without picking up on the location. So it's all your fault then Nicki? :D ;)

i live in chinnor - this is were they were introduced mmm 15 years ago ? i think there were 2 pairs originally , they are now everwere in the skys for what seems like 20 sq miles ! shame as there is very little other bird life :(

Huh, theres loads of birdlife in the chinnor area - I did a bird survey on the ridgeway national trail last year and we got 39 species of small bird which included all the gt tits, coal tit, blue tit, long tailed tit, bull finch, gold finch, greeen finch, chaffinch, all the usal sorts of sparrow, blasckbirds, song thrush, robin, 2 types of woodpecker etc.

The idea that the kites have contributed to any decine in birdlife is ridiculously flawed - for a start they principally eat carrion, they arent equiped for hunting small birds.
