Red Arrows display at Weston. Help please.

Hi there. We are thinking of going to Weston on Saturday . Has anybody been to a display here before? Could you answer these questions?

- where is the best place to photograph them from?
- how long does the display last?
- any other tips?

O thanks for that. It will help us figure out if we can get back to our friends for a BBQ afterwards.
 
Thanks for the heads up, I will be nearby this weekend, so will keep an eye out for them.

I have been looking at Flickr and it seems that most group photos are taken within the 70 - 200 range. I wonder if that is long enough at Weston. Does anybody know, please?

I used my 70-200mm f4 L last year on my Canon 70D, and just cropped the photos. Like our one at Eastbourne, I see yours is also on the beach, so you should be fine with it.
Not the Reds, but here is one from last year, and we were on the beach at Eastbourne. Taken with the 70-200mm.

Have you found out about the best locations as I am also tempted to go but I don't know Western at all.

No not sure about that still. I might take my 100- 400 to allow for them being farther out to sea. A friend at the club last night said that at Cosford they were much farther away than in previous years.
 
Due to the Shoreham disaster, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has increased the minimum altitude at which ex-military jets can perform aerobatic manoeuvres, increased the minimum distance of separation between a civil display and the crowds, as the Weston Airshow will be over the Sea, would suggest taking a 300mm at a minimum. however 400mm is now really the minimum in light of Shoreham,

@Archie747 - If you look at the link I provided earlier, and the resulting search results, you will see that the airshow centre point will be left of the Grand Pier. Also included list of Aircraft and flying times.

Take both the 100-400mm and 70-200mm. This is a quick shot of one of the Reds as he flew right over us on the beach last year, 70-200mm and did not zoom at all, so a small crop.

Thank you but I was hoping for some local/inside information.
 
I had 300 and D500 at brixham the other week and was too close for many of their manoeuvres I'd use 70-300 if you want the whole 9 in formation and some space to show smoke trails or 300+ for tight up close shots
 
I'd take both 300 and 70-200 if you have it as shows are varied
 
Well, what a fabulous day so thanks for all your info. There is much up the creek in this country at the moment but the Red Arrows were fantastic. Excellent day out. We have the decorators in at the moment and can't get to my computer to download them. I used. 100-400 on my 5D3 and a 12 -200 on a CSC. We parked on the beach. Brilliant.
 
I got to see them as well. The traffic from Bristol was dreadful and WSM was almost gridlocked, but I got there with 15m to spare. They are a wonderful spectacle, well worth the effort. I used Sigma 170-600 on a Canon, but didn't need the full length. Will wait and see if they are any good when I get back to my pc.

Out of interest were you using the mark I version of the 100-400 and if so how do you rate that lens.
 
So now its done, was a great 2 day event I thought, lots on show for the families and kids and the airshow itself wasn't half bad considering it was free! Looking forward to seeing your photos guys.

I was using the Mark 2 which I acquired some while after selling the Mark 1; I didn't like the trombone effect on that lens. Paired with either my 5D3 or my 1dx2 ( which will go with me next year if we are about - wasn't sure what the conditions would be like, shoulder injury and so on)' it's excellent. Also very good with the 1.4 III converter but didn't need that for what I was hoping to get yesterday. Hope to get them on my computer in a day or so ( decorators here at mo).
