Red Arrows crash at Bournemouth Air Show

Always watch the Red Arrows whenever I get chance, very sad news RIP
 
Heard about this whilst I was at Shoreham Airshow today. Very sad news indeed, especially since both airshows were sharing various display teams.
 
Terrible news. These guys are amazing and some of the top pilots in the world. Like other 'dangerous' jobs like f1 they know the risks but fortunately this doesn't happen often, and while a sad time, he has achieved more than most of us and given so many people so much pleasure. I spent most of my childhood at air shows as my dad was a pilot, and knew a few pilots who died. While any death was tragic, their philosophy was that at least they died doing something they loved which I can sort of understand.

Yep just the one....... You are correct it is a twin seater, and usually the technician for each plane rides in the back to and from displays if landing --- i.e. fly in land, then take off and display...... land and then go.....

During the aerobatic display though, it's pilot only.

I was actually at Bournemouth airport when it happened. They came in low to do a pass and then split left and right as usual to come round for landing. Five went to the left and four (including Red4) to the right.

Not sure what happened after that but it was noticed only 8 landed and then someone with a scanner said one had crashed. Next thing we saw the Merlin helicopter (in the show) circling a spot not far away and then he was joined by police and coastguard choppers at which point the Merlin must have found some clear ground and landed to presumably help.

Sad day ...
 
I am in the military and have just read all the posts. It's very sad news that one of it not the best display teams in the world has lost a team member. Some very thoughtful posts ladies and gents.

If possible I think any shots of red 4 should be posted in his memory.

All I can say is my heart goes out to family, friends and the rest of the team whom I'm sure will be having a drink to remember him and the good times.

I've had the honour of seeing the Reds a few times over the last couple of years, the last time being 2 weeks ago at Newcastle, Co Down. They were due to perform at Portrush, Co Antrim in 2 weeks but their participation will obviously be cancelled.

Out of curiosity is there anyway of identifying Red 4 in our Red Arrows shots? By registration?

RIP FLT LT John Egging. My thoughts are with the whole team and of course his family.

The Hawks a two seat trainer but the Reds normally fly solo and there's been no reports that there was a passenger.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time.

I think John only joined this year, (which makes it even sadder still).
If that's the case, I won't have any pictures of him in Red 4.

I was on my way to Hurn Airport when my daughter rang and told me the tragic news, was so upset.

RIP Jon Egging and thanks for memories.
 
Very sad news.

Questions were raised why "Eggman" didn't eject but it looks like he was more concerned with flying the jet away from populated areas and nearby walkers than saving himself.

That's the actions of a true hero.

RIP.
 
Latest news says that he did eject, probably too late.
 
Yeah I just read that, probably ejected too late after wrestling the plane onto a safer path though it's still not confirmed? Either way he was pulled from the river...

Been away for the weekend. Only just got online. I've spent many many hours at Scampton on practise days shooting and listening to the Reds on the scanner. I am still in shock. My thoughts go to Jons family, the team and his friends. I have the utmost of respect for the lot of you.

was at Bournemouth last Friday to see Jon and his team's brave and marvellous show. Very sadden by the news.
There must be someone nailed the pink 'love' heart smoke formation. It would mean so much to Jon's family and the team.

A tragic event indeed.

The DM are reporting this morning that the suspected cause of the accident was a bird strike resulting in engine shutdown. However I've not seen that reported anywhere else, and I take what I read in the DM with a pinch of salt.
 
The DM are playing a bit fast and loose with the conventions on reporting Service incidents on this one and have been getting a bit close to the nail at times. I'm not massively impressed with their actions tbh!

this, yes didnt they announce him dead before the service announcement ? - Very poor imo (one hopes his wife didnt read it on the Dm website before she was officially told)

and their article on cause is plausible, but its just speculation at this stage, it probably translates as " some bloke told one of our reporters it might have been a bird strike"
 
Excellent images Kev, especially the first.

I hadn't seen the Red Arrows for a few years but marvelled anew at their precise and breathtaking display (in pouring rain) at Silverstone last month. This is very sad news indeed.
 
Many moons ago (12 to be precise) I met "Eggman" at Boscombe Down when he was in his last year at Southampton UAS. He'd just been awarded his bursary and was joining up for Initial training the following September I believe.

Needless to say he wouldn't have remembered the spotty 15yr old "space cadet" but he was at Boscombe for the day we turned up for a visit and flights, he was chatty and passionate about joining the RAF, sat talking to a group of us about the UAS and Bursaries and how best to go about joining up.

I remember this as he was the first person to give us all an honest discussion about the process and whether we should join...he convinced me to apply for my scholarship. I didn't pass the medical (thanks to juvenile migraines) but it's something that stuck with me.

I totally agree with you and it wouldn't be the first time a paper has made up it's own story based on speculation.

It's well documented that the biggest cause of aircraft crashes, military and civilian, is bird strikes. It's a massive problem and can trash an engine in seconds.

RIP Eggman, another great loss to our service.

From what I remember (and it's over 20 years and all rather hazy now), the Mk10 is a "zero zero" seat, in that safe ejection is possible at zero altitude and zero speed, provided of course the plane is the right way up. I don't remember what altitude is required to safely eject from an upside-down plane.
 
Such a tragic loss. Thoughts go out to his family and friends. I just hope that there wasn't anything overlooked if it was one of the two planes that wasn't fit to fly for the blackpool air show.

If a plane gets hit by a bird, is there not another engine? I don't know anything about planes, but I hoped there was a back up?

This is very sad, and I've seen the red arrows quite alot. Hopefully Jons family will take some comfort in all the lovely messages and well wishes that have been sent across the world. RIP
