Planning a shoot late evening and will be using my 586ex. If i manage to find a way of attaching a softbox to a stand which way should i aim the flash, into the any and use the silver internal covering or straight through with the diffuser sheet? Also, will it work ok? Im guessing it will act like a brolly which i have somewhere but cannot locate.

Why wouldn't it work? There are lots of softboxes made specifically for use with hot-shoe guns.

Well im guessing it would but didnt want to rig something up to be advised of a different method. Should i shoot through or into? It will probably be windy and low light so would like to get it sorted before setting out :-)

What softbox did you have in mind? There's not usually any choice.

Its a Lencarta 20''x27'' jobbie.

Ah right, do you mean with one of Lencarta's hot-shoe-to-S-fit adapters? That's a bit unusual, using a regular studio softbox in that way.

Probably best to let Garry Edwards advise you. I'm sure he'll be along.

No hotshoe fittings or Bowens adapters, im going to have to rig it myself or get someone to hold it. Just wondering what would give the best results, shoot in or through?

Lencarta doesn't make a softbox of that size, but assuming that your softbox has the standard S-fit, the normal solution is to use a hotshoe flash to S-fit adapter.
Softboxes (should) work by having some of the light going through the diffusers and some bouncing around off the walls first. One limitation of using hotshoe flashes is that, because they nearly all have attached reflectors, the light doesn't bounce around as well as it should.

You can overcome that to a large degree by setting the zoom as wide as possible and fitting a Stofen diffuser to the front.

Defo one of yours Garry, two came in the three head kit. Its fits to the strobe by means of four bolts. The measurements were taken corner to corner assembled. Thanks for your advice, much appreciated.

Ah, that will be one of the kits sold on Ebay a few years ago. In which case you can't use it with a S-fit adapter, because it's 'universal fit'

Corner to corner measurements are deceptive, and are used for things like TV screens - we measure across flats.
