Recovering files from SD card

During a senior moment, my wife accidently deleted files from the SD card in her compact camera. Can anyone please advise if there is a way of recovering them? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can.

There are many recovery programs, but the basic version of this one is free and works well: http://web1.web.piriform.com/recuva/download

If you buy a new Sandisk SD card, they're currently giving away a free program for recovery too. I've only just installed it, but haven't used it yet. I have used Recuva previously though.

Thanks for all the help. I downloaded Recuva and after finding only 7 files initially I ran it again it eventually found a total of 570 files and earned me loads of brownie points.
