I need help, some time ago I backed up a load of images to DVD now I am trying to get these back off the disk.

The disk opens in Explorer but when trying to copy the folders on there it hangs on particular files. So far I have been able to transfer some of the pictures but by copying them one at a time.

Does anyone know if there is any software or a company that can recover this information?

The photos on the disk are the only copies, as my computer died in transit back from New Zealand. :bang:

Thanks in advance,

Chris

I have the same problem, no one could help. I tried a few things they said but nothing worked. Let me nkow if you find a way and i will do the same.

there is a microsoft utility called robocopy which is a command based tool (DOS), you could try copying the files using this, although it won't help recover any corrupt ones, it should enable you to copy all good ones from the cd in one batch.

If you need a link to it, or the correct switches to use let me know and I will spend a few minutes doing it for you.

I think ISObuster was suggested last time this came up. Did that not work at all?

I'd try as many DVD drives as you can (Plextor used to be good) to try and read the disc as all DVD drives are not created equal :)

Try using your disc in a writer, they seem to be more robust at reading dodgy data.

Your best bet is to copy the disc to an image, using as slow a speed as possible.
First try it with error correction, but if that doesn't work, turn the error correction off (and cut your losses with the few files that will end up corrupt).

Then write that image back to a fresh disc.

Unfortunately, this is what happens with discs. We all seem to think they are permanent backups, but especially with cheaper discs, they have a limited shelf life, (much less than the manufacturer suggests).

I need to go through all my DV and Photo backups and put them on better discs I think, Im dreading to think how many wont work..

Thanks for all the responses so far.

I think my first port of call is to bring it into the office and try in every one of the 80 or so computers here.

This is an issue that worries me greatly as I have had problems with an external heard drive in the past, so I thought that an archive on DVD was the solution.

What does everyone else do regarding archiving the MB's of data that these DSLRs produce?

Chris

I have a large network drive plugged into the router that is the primary backup and some external USB HDDs that give me a second backup when I remember to do it.

I used to use DVDs but stopped about a year ago as they were starting to seem small :)

I use Iomega REV drive
exchangeable hard drive 35 Gbyte cartridge

Ive used RescuePro in the past with corrupt/damaged memory cards, a friend had a dodgy external h/d with some problems and we were also able to recover data with RP.

Might be a worth a go, if i remember correctly it costs around £12

Good luck
