Recording your pc monitor

There's thousands of videos out there of people using something to film themselves on the PC, but how do they actually do it and is there any free programs to do so? I'm not sure what to look for.

If your just trying too video what you do on the screen then jing works quite well

I think they use HDMI capture cards to record the footage.

As for PC screen recording, Microsoft Expression screen capture is very good quality and free if you want to record less then 10 minutes.
