Guys

First off, I know nothing about video, but want to have a go at doing some, so I hope you can help me.
I have access to 3 cameras to shoot a video of a friends band, 1 song recorded on all cameras and then do a little playing around with it.

My Fuji XE-2 - Full HD 1920*1080 @ 60fps or
Full HD 1920*1080 @ 30fps

My Nikon D4 - Covers all fps

My Panasonic HDC-SD9 - Full HD 1920*1080 @ 25fps.

Now, I surmise that you have to have all cameras set to the same fps to make it easier (or am I incorrect in this assumption)? The problem is, that the Fuji doesn't do 25fps, so what issues will I have when trying to put these clips together, or is it a case of converting the Fuji files in some encoder? to 25fps.
Or indeed, Is there no problems at all in mixing Fps?

Regards

Phil

You have a number of issues.

Conversion from 29.97 to 25 fps is quite difficult. There are various algorithms to do it, but the good ones (motion compensated phase correlation ones) cost quite a bit of money (i.e. more than you'd pay for a decent car).

So if you do go down the multiple frame rate route you can either play one off-speed or allow something to do a conversion which will leave visible artefacts - these may or may not be objectionable, you won't know until you do the conversion.

The other problem you'll have is lighting. If you're using mains lighting it flickers at some multiple of 50 Hz (if you're in the EU). Shooting at 25 or 50 means you're capturing the same part of the flicker waveform each time so you don't notice it. Shooting 29.97 or 59.94 means you capture a different part each time. It can be very noticable.

Thanks for the reply Phil.
Im really new to video, and just want to give it a go, I could just record the whole lot on one camera, but thats not what I really want to do. Ive seen a video today which says that FCPX will handle different fps, I guess I just need to get out there and try it.

If it doesn't work, well theres no loss to anyone, but it'll be fun trying.

Phil
