Recorded delivery is not "tracked and traced" as many believe, it is what it implies, delivery is recorded, that and only that.

Recorded delivery service is the normal postal service but with the "delivery" being recorded, ie a signature being required.

If a seller sends an item recorded delivery and supplies the "reference number" it is of no benefit to the buyer, it is only of benefit to the seller and the Royal Mail to prove it has been signed for.

If it has been signed for and the buyer has still has not received the item it is up to the buyer to prove they have not received it.

RMSD. (Royal Mail Special Delivery) does, under normal circumstances offer a full "Track&Trace" service.
 
I've been telling people that for months, recorded is a waste of 60p it offers no more protection than standard mail with a proof of posting which is free.

i've sold a couple of items on ebay where the buyer has said they haven't received it but strangely as soon as I tell them i'll put a claim in and could I have it in writing they haven't received it as it's a criminal offence to claim from RM for something you've received it turns up the next day.

All you need is to get a receipt when you post something, it's as good as "recorded"

No it's not, it is totally different. One can show something was sent, the other shows that something arrived. That's a huge difference, especially when trading.

Recorded isn't Recorded anyway. It's 'Signed For' and has been for some time now. There was a time when sending things this way would *almost* guarantee delivery the next day. I now find that 'Signed For' items consistently take 2, 3 or even 4 days to arrive.

The only part of the Royal Fail that works is RMSD but it can get expensive if you are using it almost every day. For this reason I've just, after several years without, re-subscribed to the DX service.

if the item is worth up to £39 and you send it 1st class it's insured for £39 anyway, if they say they haven't received it claim from RM, you'll have a proof of posting so it's not you that'll be committing a criminal offence if they have received it.

And thats the way recorded items have always been, imo if people beleived otherwise then its their fault for not finding out exactly what that service involves :shrug:
 
Someone I know, a dodgy ****, bought a Katana from ebay. When it arrived there was no signature required.
He got in contact with the seller and complained that it hadn't arrived, and the seller gave him a full refund.

What an arse.

Then you can claim back the delivery cost, I have done that myself, takes a while but worth it:)

I ordered a book early friday morning from Amazon (other bookstores are available :D) and paid £5.86 special delivery. (next day before 1pm - saturday. Order was also dispatched friday morning so item was in stock too.

I received it this morning :bang:

I don't quite understand this thread? What are you trying to say? Recorded "only" requires a signature. I don't get why we need this thread to tell us what recorded is? Did people think it was something else then? Me = confused
I'm not being silly, I'm genuinely confused. I see recorded as a safer way of sending first class mail since it requires a signature to prove it was received. Why is that a waste of money?

It doesn't guaranty delivery, nor does it fully cover loss, you only receive back the value of they item, nothing for the postage you've paid .. Also you have to wait some thing like 15 or 30 days before you can make a claim.
The item I lost through recorded delivery apparently never even made it out of the post office I used to send it.
