Reconmend a second camera body

I do mainly motorsport stuff, but looking to get behind the scenes abit too. I have just sold my 350d on ebay but still have the battery grip, at the moment.

Now i am thinking of a second body, so i can have them set up with different lens so i dont have to change between the longer lens to shorter ones to prevent dust/water ingress etc when like at the weekend it was raining. PLus having a second body would be handy if anything happened to one, as id am looking to start going as a team tog.

So what would you go for.

400d the old grip will fit it.
a second 30d
5d
or inport a 1ds mkii from Hongkong? and use the 1d as the main camera.

Or just forget the body and invest in an new short length lens, or put it towards and 300mm or 400mm fixed Canon lens, to complement my 70-200mm f2.8 is
 
Iv got a 5D and love it to bits
but for wot you are doing i would go with the 1Ds (its waterprove)

1d MkII N is the body to get. When it's wet, wrap up the 30D and use the 1D with a weather proof lens.

Do you use your 30D in the wet? I was shooting a football match and even although I had a bag over my 20D I struggled to keep it dry. I was scared of shorting something.

This is one of the reasons I'd love a 1D MkII N (or a 1D MkIII but that's too expensive at the moment)

Good points Joe, but i still think water proof is the way, after all this is england.
 
Don't think they are actually water proof.... just weather resistant. I wouldn't submerge it in water :)
 
The 1d was the camera i really really would love, but cant afford 2 hence the 30d which i have been asured was better at taking action shots then the 5d.

After selling the 350d and a couple of other things i am in the postion i can get a 400d (for the money the 350d sold for) or another 30d by adding a little on top.

I have full waterproof case for the 350d/400d/30d/5d with specially adapted eye piece, so your not looking through plastic. Although the water resistance of the 1ds mk2n would be nice but is the camera worth me saving another £1,000 on top of a 30d. I was thinking of the 400d as it wouldnt have cost me anything so to speak, but give me a larger res and more focus points over the 350d, but continue to save for the 1ds mk3, which is the one i ideally want to get.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - get a new old stock, or nearly new 10D from a dealer. You'll get one for around £300 with a six or twelve month guarantee!

How soon people forget. This is one of the best cameras Canon has ever made, and still more than good enough today.

The only issue it has, is the 1.5 second delay from off to the first capture. Once it's on, it's as fast as anything out there, and it has a magnesium body.

It's only a couple of years since these were selling for £1300, and Microglobe still sells them for £650!

Brilliant camera. I still use mine lots.

Mine gets a drenching on a regular basis and I've never had any kind of problem with it. The old D30 also got wet a good few times without any problems - I generally carry an old face flannel and use that for mopping down and/or covering the thing with if it's realy hammering down, and generally try to avoid too much water sitting on the camera but it's never shown any signs of getting temperamental! (The 70-200 I let get soaked mind you - just because I can!!!)
 
Just need to be aware, that whilst the pro bodies are 'sealed', not all of the lenses have the body seal that makes the whole outfit 'water resistant', some L lenses are not water resistant either.

It'salso worth bearing in mind, that Canon says that for the lens to be water resistant, it must have a filter screwed into the end!!

I carry several dry nylon carrier bags around, and a couple of rubber bands. If it rains, I just poke a hole in the bottom of the bag, and secore it round the lens hood with a rubber band. Looks awkward, but it works. Never use the bag twice though!

Definitely the 30D and not the 5D. The 5 isnt for motorsport.

My oppo who I go shoot motorsport with has a 20D and a 30D compared to my 350D. If I was in your position I'd have the 30D again, no question.

The 400D is a nice camera but doesn't give you much over the 350D you sold, whereas the 30D as you know is a proper job with the better controls.

I've had a lot of success with the 5D on action shots. It's no 1D but it's pretty good. I can't comment on the 30D as I've never used one.

What I will say is that it makes a lot of sense to have 2 bodies with the same user interface. I really struggled with a 1D Mk II and a 5D in Kenya in January - so much so that I've just sourced a bargain used 1DII so that I can have 2 identical bodies for the next trip. Run a 400 prime on one and 70-200 on the other...
