Just checking to see if there are any brands of sock that people would recommend please. I understand that merino wool is considered the optimum and that Bridgedale have a good reputation but do seem fairly pricey. I'm not going to be out in -10 conditions but looking for socks that are comfortable to wear, don't fall apart or lose shape after a couple of washes and can cope with moderately cold weather. Ideally not too expensive would be a bonus

Bridgedale Merino ;)

Thanks everyone for your input. It's given me a good starting point

Gel insoles might help to. Is is pretty much the same material as they make silicon oven gloves from.

Grisport merino. Half price of Bridgedale.
special offer at the moment - 2 pairs for £10.

I've been using the Kirkland (Costco) Merino socks for a few years now and have no complaints. Comfortable, warm and wash well. They are sold in packs of 4 pairs, and are sometimes on special offer - I think I was £15 for 4 pairs.

All depends on the distances your walking.
I just wear a pair of Marino socks for up to a few hours.
I double up and wear some liner socks and smart wool for longer walks with the key being swapping to a fresh pair of socks every 6 hours or so. Heat and moisture are the killer. Keep your feet cool and dry.

This stuff is fantastic for longer walks as well.
