Hi everyone :D

I was hoping to view the classifieds on here, but since I am too new I can't.

Can anyone recommend any good sources of second hand camera equipement?

I think im probably looking for a Nikkon D70 (s) and slowly building up a collection of lenses before upgrading the body.

I know of London camera exchange, and a few other cash convertor type places. I'd much prefer to buy off an enthusiast/specialist (even if I have to pay a little more) rather the ebay route. So can anyone recommend anywhere else?

Thanks in advance and all the best for xmas :thumbs:

Thanks for that Nawty :)

I've found it and im having a peep now.

Just out of interest what nikon do you have and how do you find it?

I've got various Nikons, currently a D700, D60 and a few film SLRs too. I've also owned a D90.

The reason I originally went for Nikon was that I preferred the feel of the D60 over the Canon 450D. I had gone to the shop thinking I'd get the Canon but after having had a feel with all the options I went Nikon.

That's the best advice really, go and try some, but if you're looking at the older models this could be a bit tricky.

Thanks for that Simon, I have popped into my local LCE (even though i thought it was a bit wierd it being called that in manchester :) ), and I was very impressed with the time the assistant spent helping me out and showing different models. From talking to him I think im better off buying into one of the 'big two', canon or nikon.
He even did suggest about putting a body and lens deal together for me, but it never hurts to have a look around when it comes to shopping ;)

I have used a 35mm praktica SLR quite a bit when I was younger, and played with my brothers EOS 400D but the main reason im looking at Nikon is I think there are more second hand lenses around, so I thought it would be better to spend a little less on a body and build up some lenses then upgrade the body when funds allow. Is this a good way to start?

Im open to any advice really, as I'm sure everyone on here has been through the 'what do I get' phase ;)

thanks for that special man, im still finding out whats what on here. :thumbs:

Brocco - no worries :) A few of the links to the shops are dead; they've either closed down or changed address. But the majority are useful.

I generally use MPB and ApertureUK for most of my purchases, as they have good stock turnaround. Mifsuds are good to, as are Ffordes. The TP classifieds are excellent too :)

............................ The TP classifieds are excellent too :)

I was hoping to discover that for myself.... but I guess i've got about another 7 weeks and umpteen posts to find out. :whistling:

Im looking to be sorted out with a new camera in early/mid january at the latest :thumbs:

Yep mine used to be Norwich Camera Centre,many years ago i used to work at the one in Manchester,while doing my city & guild in photography.
I alway try and buy local if i can :)

I have bought from Wilkinsons camera and LCE both provided good service and items were as described.

Thanks for all your help everyone. I was originally looking for a D70s because the s obviously means that its much better ;) but after having a little look through here then there is little between them so its just a case of whatever comes up at the right price at the right time.

Recommendations for 2nd hand camera equipment

As suggested

Mbp photography

Other
ffordes
mifsuds
camtech
digital depot
park camera's

Not a big fan of LCE, their prices are overly priced for the equipment they're offering and if your selling equipment, their financial offers are insulting boarding on ripping you off.

The other sources are the for sales forums on TP, AV and POTN which are very good or if your brave enough the aution sites like eBay or Gumtree

Thanks for everyones help. It is very much appreciated. :)

Stupid question...... Can anyone tell me what AV and POTN are? I guess TP means here.

Thanks a lot.

Personally I find that most of the items in Mifsud's 2nd hand listings are the most expensive 2nd hand items you can find...that is my experience anyway and up to 3 or 4 months ago I was watching ALL the 2nd hand sites daily. Maybe you can haggle in the shop if you live in the area, not sure, but I'd certainly hope so.

Example (Currently listed on MPB and Mifsuds)
Mifsuds -> Canon 300mm f/4 L IS Exc++ £949.00
MPB Photographic -> Canon 300mm f/4 L IS Mint-£879.00

Mifsuds -> Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS Exc++ £1299
MPB Photographic -> Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS Exc++ £1099

I have used MPB a few times, prices are more than in the classified on here, but they are quite well priced and offer a guarantee/warranty over the classifieds. I have also bought a few items from the classifieds on here and am happy with all the purchases.

Wait to you get in the classifieds here. You'll poop your pants with excitement and your wallet will be on a diet it'll be that thin.

IMHO MPB are doing us all a favour by keeping classified prices on here in check yet still providing a service of offering good value, guarantied gear.

Sadly, I don't think its a business model most traditional camera businesses can sustain - you can't hope to sell new kit with such well priced used gear on your shelves.

Thanks for that, I'd love to peep in the classifieds here, especially from January onwards as people shift their new gear that they have bought/been brought in the sales...... but It'll still be a little while longer before I can look. Ideally I'd like to be buying something in January myself.

here you go guys -all your woes are over:

Happy Xmas to you too, I hope everyone has had a very merry christmas break :thumbs:

Great Thread, really seems that on these forums everything has already been answered :D

Im sure this question gets asked a couple of times a month on here, so it just goes to show the patience and willingness to help new members to the forum by the existing members :thumbs: :thumbs: :thumbs:

25 contributing posts (ie not post whoring) and 60 days membership

on the question of second hand dealers I'd highly recomend MPB , T4, Camtech, and Mifsuds
