Yes
I used to own a 40d with 17-55 IS and 70-200 2.8 IS.

I had to sell up earlier in the year due to an unexpected event but now i am back on the scene. As such I have read great reviews of the D300 and am close to purchasing.

I see that Nikon do a similar 17-55mm lens to the canon. Can anyone vouch for this lens.

Also is there a suitable zoom lens like the canon that will get the best from the body?

I'm new to Nikon so please be gentle :shake:

Thanks

The 17-55 Nikkor is, quite simply, one of the best lenses I have ever used and owned. Build is excellent, along with pretty much all other aspects of it bar the weight. Though saying that, for what you get, it isn't that bad. I could not recommend this lens highly enough.

The nikon 70-200 VR is also, top notch. if you didnt want to pay a fortune, there is the 80-200 f/2.8D (2 ring). this will work on FF bodies as well, but does not have VR or and AF-S motor (HSM or ultrasonic or what ever canon call it :D) This can be had for ~£400

If you have the cash though, go for the 70-200 VR. An outstanding lens.

Thanks. I have read some reviews on this lens and they are all fantastic. My only concern is the lack of VR (i guess having it with the canon was a luxury!). But i can't see another lens with similar specs that has it?

Why would you want/need VR on a 17-55mm f/2.8 lens? Surely only if you're shooting in the dark!

I use this combination on a set of D200's. The 17-55 is superb. I wouldnt worry about the lack of VR or AF-S focussing on the 80-200 as the D200 motor is more than fast/accurate enough. Would assume the D300 would perform the same/better.

Out of curiosity, why the switch away from Canon?

On a D300 definitely the 17-55mm I've never felt the need for VR on a wide angle lens, but then I don't own any lenses with VR at present.

At the long end it's been said already too. A 70-200VR if you're buying new. If you don't mind going a little older then an 80-200AF or ( and my favourite ) an 80-200AFS will fit the bill. But as said no VR on these two.

It depends how steady his hands are, VR certainly helps a lot if you have unsteady hands at any focal length.

I woul tend to agree, However the AF-S lens is no longer made and as such, rare as rocking horse s***.

I think the original point about the 70-200 stand tbh. If going new, and you have the cash, this is a cracking lens.

Though it will suffer from the crop factor and therefore altering the effective focal length, the 24-70 Nikkor is a fantastic lens also. Leaves room at the wide end for a dedicated ultra wide as well like the 10-20 / 12-24 / 14-24.Worth a thought?

Saying that though, if you did want to stick with DX lenses for the time being, I could not recommend the 17-55 highly enough. It really is a pleasure to use.
