I've just invested in a copy of Lightroom Classic/Adobe's Creative Cloud Photography Plan.

Can anyone recommend any good introductory and intermediate user guides or "how to" books please.

Many thanks.

I,ve always had problems with the lightroom catalogue system, more down to me not really getting to the nuts and bolts of it, and just using it randomly, which can be disastrous, but I recently got hold of this Scott Kelby tutorial, and it's transformed my workload, whilst it doesn't show you how to edit in the program, it has some great information regarding organising your catalogue.

Lots of experienced Lightroom people on the forum that are happy to answer any questions you may have.

The Lightroom Queen book, suggested is a good start, and reference, but possibly a lot to take in.

Reading questions on Forums it would seem a major issue starting with LR is understanding how the catalogue system works, and what "importing" into Lightroom really means. You are likely to save yourself a lot of pain, if you devote some time into understanding this aspect of LR, before thinking about editing your photographs.

The video suggested by @TG should be watched and the Julieanne Kost youtube channel has been running a series on getting started Lightroom, All her videos are very good.

To be honest never really watched her extensively, but I will certainly take a look at her tutorials in the immediate future, as I do like what I see.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to reply, some of the sources look very helpful and they have stopped me going out and buying some potentially expensive books.

Apps continually advance at pace. Books about them may seem attractive at the time as we strive to learn, but soon become fossils, & generally the money would have been better spent elsewhere ...

I liked the Martin Evening books about the early editions of Lightroom, when I started using it 15+ years ago. I don't know if there are newer versions of the books, but the fundamentals of Lightroom, e.g. the catalog system and develop module have not changed significantly. There are a few more options now, but the basics of import/edit/export are still the same.

It's probably worth mentioning Robin Whalley, who has a useful Youtube channel and series of low cost books e-books and some in paper as well,, including some for Lightroom. The books are regularly updated. I still prefer books as I find them easier to work through tutorials with a book, than try and keep up with a video.

I think Martin Evening's books LR and PS were generally seen as the best available,

They were regularly updated, but started to fall behind several years ago, and it turned out he had been fighting cancer for many years. He died at 63 in December 2022..

Sad to hear that Martin Evening has passed away. Not only was he an expert on the topics he wrote about but a very helpful and friendly guy.

I was going to link Robin Whalley also,,excellent author and I was also going to recommend Martin, shocked to hear the sad news just now, I messaged him or emailed with a question and he got back to me very quickly, wow that can’t have been just before he passed.really sad news, his books are v good

Martin Evening's books are more like a reference book than easy guide but they suited me as a scientist. At one point we established at my Camera Club that I was the only member to have read the Martin evening book on PS and the later book on LR from end to end. To be fair most dipped into the topics which concerned them at the time.

I also spotted what I thought was an error in the colour management section (a topic on which I had built up a lot of experience). I sent an email to Martin and he quickly replied agreeing with my comment. As a thank you he offered to produce a bespoke colour profile for me which was of value to me at the time so I took him up on the offer. Overall this resulted in my respect for him increasing and soon after he became the official Adobe PS author.
