I'm about to delve into the world of HDTV for the first time.
Can anyone recommend must have films on bluray?
My main interests are action/thriller/scifi.
I have quite a collection of dvd's and also wonder if it is worth replacing them?
Thanks in advance.

Avatar is a no brainer.

A lot of conversions to Blu Ray of older films don't seem to be worth it. However these are the few that stick out and have had excellent conversions:

The Alien Anthology (All 4 (well 8 as you get the special editions too) films on BD for £15 at Amazon)
Blade Runner

All 6 Star Wars films available on Blu Ray but Ep1. released in 3D at cinemas next month.

3D BluRay to follow

When I did the same last year I bought one called 'Red Cliff' , a two disc film set in china's Three Kingdom Period around 200A.D.
Its a beautiful film with sword and battle scenes that will take your breath away on your shiny new HDTV!
...and batman, the one with Heath ledger as the Joker.

Ive got 37" Panasonic plasma HDTV and I dont think I can see any difference between blu-ray and DVD, yet I have colleagues who swear they can tell the difference on their 32".
Maybe its my eyes, maybe because my telly is 720p.
Hoping to upgrade to a 46" at some point so maybe I will be able to tell then!

I do still buy an occasional blu ray but only on films that I think are very good.
Ive got Bladerunner.
I also get bought them for birthdays etc.

Wolverine worth having. Bourne trilogy? Lord of the rings?
Frozen Planet/Planet earth etc.
Batman - Dark Knight
Terminator Salvation

I'd have certainly thought you'd have been able to see a difference. For me the difference is massive, not just in the amount of detail in the picture but also the extra quality of the sound (probably not noticeable with just the tv speakers). If you sit a long way from the tv then perhaps you can't see as much of the fine detail that is added.

Since the TV I'm getting is 50" plasma with a home cinema set, I believe there will be a marked difference in quality. It is also 3D but I'm not interested in that (but got a good deal).

I've got a few of the suggestions on DVD but I certainly think Star Wars will be worth a go.
I fancy Red Cliff but my wife won't be interested especially as it all subtitles I believe (?).

Cloverfield (if you can handle the camera wobble!) my 1000w 5.1 surround system loves it! matrix trilogy is a good one, the new Tron, the dark knight is a must!! The way I look at bluray, if it's got special effects then go for it. Not much point watching Marley and me on bluray and I would definetly be using the 3D if it was available be a shame not to use it what's the point in driving a convertible with the roof constantly up :)

Up to now, we've bought mainly action + effects type films on Bluray. The Marvel Series have all transferred well - Iron Man is a particular fave of my wifes. The obligatory Avatar is well worth a watch (again, mostly for the effects and style - the story wasnt particularly groundbreaking). LOTR series is worth a watch as well.

If you like documentaries, the recent spate from the BBC - frozen planet, wonders, life etc have all been transferred really well.

Will have another look through the collection and see what else we can recommend.

If you have a favourite movie, get in on bluray :)
Star wars on bluray look dogs danglies ;)
And the way they remastered alien is mind blowing!! If not for special effects you wouldn't say this movie is from 70's :)
If you like LOTR, get it but only extended edition.
I have few Disney cartoons as well. Some documentaries about nature look fabulous.
I have Bourne collection as well. Just look for deals as sometimes you can get disks cheap and on nice deals.

Any films you like/want get. As for your old DVD collection the quality should be a little better as most/all bluray players will have upscaling setting for dvds

As others Star Wars is a huge 'get it', Hurt locker is great as well

I've been resisting getting Star Wars on Blu Ray, I guess this thread is going to push me to get it.

Thats probably the reason - you'll see the difference better going from 480p of DVD to the full 1080p of Blu-Ray rather than limiting Blu-ray to 720p. Also the conversion is going to make a difference, some films don't look as good on Blu-ray as others

As for Blu-rays to get - I'd recommend Band of Brothers for a start. Stunning in full HD

My advice would be just get a lovefilm subscription, blurays are the same price to rent as DVDs but they're more expensive to buy, don't buy blurays because the picture is good buy films you think you'll watch again.

I've had a bluray player for 3-4 years but I only own a handful of discs

This ^ I've stopped buying Bluray discs because 99% of the films I see just don't warrant the extra £5-10 price. There is a difference between dvd and bluray but if the film/program is good you will not notice it (unless your tv is mahoosive).

I've taken to renting film online, film4od for example.

Avatar looks great on blu ray as does the dark knight which has a few IMAX scenes in there.
Inception for me is a fantastic film worth having on blu ray.

Buy the films you love otherwise you will have a collection of all sorts in blu ray which will be a waste of money in my opinion.

  • Red Cliff,
  • Blade Runner,
  • Avatar,
  • Casino Royale
  • Dark City: The Director's Cut
  • Pixar films such as Monsters Inc are good to show off the quality
  • Zulu is absolutly excellent quality much better than some of the new films even though it is nearly 50 years old.

buy films you love rather than for purely picture quality.

Agree with this. Avatar looked spectacular when I saw it on sky (not sure if that's 720p or 1080i), but for me it's not a good enough film to buy on disc.

TV speakers?! Heaven forfend. Ive got surround sound amp and speakers.

Tending to agree with others who have said only buy the films you love and will watch again on blu-ray. I must have 300+ dvd's but only a handful of blu-rays. Maybe that will change if I get a whizzo new 1080p 46" and can suddenly notice a difference!

Have put most of the recommendations on my wish list.

Have just bought Xmen quadrilogy and Xmen-First Class along with The Crow, as they were all good prices from Play.

The Bourne Trilogy
Anchorman
