Hi Everyone

Im getting married on the 20th April (4 weeks, ahhhhh :runaway:) and im going to the Lake District on my honeymoon with the caravan, my camera and the dogs!!

I have never been there before and wondered if anyone can recommend a good caravan site to stay at please and also some places for me to do some nice walks and get some nice pictures?

Can't help on the caravan site I'm afraid (I live close enough that I can be over there in less than 2 hours) but I do pass one at Castlerigg which is quite handy.

Regarding photography opportunities, From Keswick down Derwentwater is nice, Borrowdale, Ashness Bridge etc. Ullswater is good, and you can go over Kirkstone Pass to Windermere. The Honister Pass takes you through to Buttermere.

I spend quite a lot of time there, I also geotag my photos so if you want some ideas have a look on my flickr, http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=51242059@N05&q=lake district and if you click into each photo there is a map at the top right with the exact location.

I think there is plenty of choice for caravan sites in the Lakes - a lot will depend on the level of facilities you'd be wanting ( if any ). We always tend to use club sites because they are reliable and to a standard so you know what to expect.

PS hope you'll be taking your new husband with you !

I used to be part of the caravan club but im not any more although i think i do still have one of their site guides!

I really want to stay a few nights in different places as travel around sight seeing.

And i was thinking of leaving him at home and just honeymooning with the dogs!!! :naughty::naughty:
 
Go to ukcampsite and search the sites, then read the reviews I think the problem over there is you're spoilt for choice
 
unfortunately we didn't get away on our honeymoon :(

However I have been thinking about going this year - maybe for our 1st anniversary :banana:

I may even stay in a cottage instead of taking caravan, so please keep your advice and recommendations for places to stay in (or very near) the Lake District where we can take the dogs and my camera.

The weather is notoriously fickle.... be prepared for some practice in low light conditions - but on its day, there are photo opportunities around every corner. My favourite parts are on the western side - Wast Water and Buttermere in particular, and if you can get a sunrise, get up Blencathra and catch the sunrise with Derwent water in view... superb!

Have a look at http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/ for a selection of cottages - you will have to pick them over to find the ones that take dogs, but the properties on there are generally pretty good, and you deal directly with the owners rather than with an agent too.
 
I just googled "dog friendly cottage lake district" and there are loads!
 
If you're going in April I'd go for a cottage with gas central heating. You might be lucky with the weather but the odds are on at least some day long rain / snow. That far out of season you should find a reasonable deal.

I use this site http://www.cottages4you.co.uk/ (8 weeks booked with no problems) but they all seem pretty similar.

For a first visit I'd stop somewhere reasonably central (Ambleside / Grasmere area). The lakes is small enough for you to easily drive to most places from there in less than an hour.

A good book for planning walks is Complete Lakeland Fells Bill Birkett - I got my copy off eBay for £3.
 
I go late June and early September. Avoiding high season when it gets seriously expensive and crowded but with a reasonable chance of good weather.
