My partner and me fancy going to Croatia for our hols this year. We are looking to stay in a villa sleeping 2-4, preferably with a pool, in a location that is near/by the coast/beach (for my partner's sake) but also within easy reach of other good landscape locations for me.

Do you have any recommendations? Did you go on a package or was it DIY booked? What tour operator/booking company did you use and would you recommend them?

Thanks in advance for your help and your recommendations

Only DIY, anywhere you go its all made for tourists, locations....anywhere in Istria, Rovinji is great, around Zadar(paklenica national park), Rab island is great (awesome nudist beach), Dubrovnik is a must.

Last time I was there it was a kind of package.
Flights in by hercules,
Hire car was a landrover
Caberet was by the snipers!!

Sorry, doesnt help much does it!

on the plus side the coast was lovely, and very photogenic

We stayed in Dubrovnik for a week and I enjoyed it but wasn't blown away by it. They have clearly embraced Dubrovnik's pull factor and the old town is scarred by huge flags advertising various "cultural" events in the city.

Not sure as to your level of fitness but Mount Srd above Dubrovnik offer some astounding views of the city and the sea/islands around Dubrovnik. Look at my Flickr for some of the example shots as well as a few more from islands in Croatia. We had a package deal with Monarch which had us staying at the Hotel Lapad. It's not luxury but I have absolutely no qualms with recommending the hotel to you.

Try and organise a boat trip around the islands or hire a boat yourself (with a skipper, as we did) and go around the islands. There are some real gems.

Thanks for the recommendations. gives me a starter for 10 in my researching

Well at least I wont need a tin helmet nowadays :D

Been to Croatia four times, although it was some time ago. Cavtat is a stunning location (some small beaches away from the centre area), with Dubrovinick not too far away. Rovinj is another beautiful place, although don't recall there being much in the way of beaches there. Depending on your situation there are plenty of stunning islands, located all over the Croatian coastline, most only being a short boat crossing away. I if was going back myself I would head for Cavtat again.

somewhere I've always wanted to visit is the Plitvice waterfalls in croatia, they look stunning ...

I wasn't impressed with Cavtat/Dubrovnik - anywhere around the Split area would be a far better choice for me. Hvar is easily accessible from Split too, and is fantastic!! :D

Thanks for the continued recommendations and views. A lot to go at but I'm still hoping to find the ideal place that's a balance of landscape stuff for me and beaches etc for my partner

I enjoyed my holiday in Dubrovnik and we spent quite a lot of time going to some of the surrounding islands. I wouldn't visit dubrovnik itself for any more than 2-3 days.
